Before the kettle, before your feet find the floor, it has already set the terms: how far you can walk today, whether the stairs are possible, which plan quietly gets cancelled.

A prayer for chronic pain has to work on those mornings. Not a long one. The prayer in the Short above takes about twenty seconds, and its most honest line is the one many people are afraid to say out loud: “I’m so tired of it.”

That line is allowed. It is, in fact, one of the oldest kinds of prayer there is.

What the Bible Does With Pain That Doesn’t Leave

Scripture does not keep sick people offstage. The Psalms give voice to someone whose body is failing: “Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed” (Psalm 6:2). No brave face. The prayer names the weakness and the bones in the same breath.

Then there is the blessing Moses speaks over the tribe of Asher near the end of Deuteronomy: “as thy days, so shall thy strength be” (Deuteronomy 33:25). Read that slowly. It does not promise a lifetime of strength handed over in advance. It promises strength measured to the day. Enough for this one. Tomorrow’s arrives with tomorrow.

That is exactly what the Short asks for: strength “for the next small thing.” Not for the whole diagnosis. Not for the next ten years. For getting dressed. For the phone call. For the school run.

Here is the harder part, and it should be said plainly. Pain that stays is not proof of weak faith. Acts records that “God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul” (Acts 19:11), with the sick recovering through cloths that had touched him. Yet late in his life, the same Paul wrote to Timothy: “Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick” (2 Timothy 4:20). He also told Timothy to “use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities” (1 Timothy 5:23).

Often. Recurring. A young leader with an ongoing complaint, and the advice he got was practical care, not a lecture about believing harder.

The New Testament holds both at once: God heals, and faithful people still live in bodies that hurt. Neither cancels the other. Paul’s own unanswered request about his “thorn in the flesh” is the best-known example, and what that thorn actually was is still a mystery.

Why a One-Breath Prayer Fits Chronic Pain

The Short ends with an instruction that is easy to miss: “Pray it again whenever the pain comes back.” That is not a production gimmick. It is one of the oldest prayer practices Christians ever wrote down.

In the early fifth century, a monk named John Cassian recorded conversations with the desert elders of Egypt. In his tenth Conference, an elder called Abba Isaac teaches a single line to repeat all day long, taken from Psalm 70:1, which the King James Version renders: “Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O LORD.” Isaac says the practice was handed down to him from a few of the oldest fathers still living.

What makes this worth knowing is where Isaac says to use it. When a headache stops him from reading. When sleep has been withdrawn from his eyes for many nights. Ordinary bodily misery, named specifically, sixteen centuries ago. His answer was not a longer prayer. It was the same short one, again.

That is why a short prayer suits a long illness:

It fits inside a flare. When pain spikes, concentration goes. One sentence can still be held.

It can be repeated without being “wrong.” Saying it the fortieth time is not failure. It is the practice working.

It still counts on the days you can’t say it. Paul wrote that “the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). Even a groan is heard.

Put together, that is a very different picture from the one many people with chronic pain quietly carry: that you must find the right words, feel the right way, and pray long enough to deserve an answer. The oldest practice we have points the other way. Short. Repeated. Honest. Offered from inside the pain rather than after it passes.

Actions to Take This Week

Write the Short’s prayer, or Psalm 70:1, on a card and put it wherever the pain usually finds you first, such as the bedside table or the bathroom mirror.

Name one “next small thing” each morning and ask for strength for that one thing only.

Tell one trusted person today how the pain actually is, instead of saying you’re fine.

A Prayer for Chronic Pain

God, my body hurts again, and I am worn thin from it. I’m tired of arranging every day around what I can’t do. I don’t want to pretend with you. Meet me here, in this bed, in this chair, in this ache. Give me strength for this one day, and for the next small thing in it. When I have to stop, let the stopping be rest, not shame. Amen.

Journal Prompts

What has chronic pain taken from you that you haven’t yet said out loud to anyone, including God?

Where do you most often “act fine,” and what would it cost to stop acting there?

What has pain tried to tell you about who you are, and is it true?

What would asking for strength for today only change about how you plan tomorrow?

“As thy days, so shall thy strength be.” Not strength for the whole diagnosis. Strength for today, and for the next small thing in it.

#ChronicPain #PrayerForHealing #ChronicIllness #BreathPrayer #FaithInPain

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for Chronic Pain

What is a good prayer for chronic pain?

A good prayer for chronic pain is short enough to pray during a flare and honest about how tired you are. One example: “God, it hurts again today. Be close to me in this, give me strength for the next small thing, and don’t let this pain tell me who I am.” Psalm 6:2 is a biblical model: “O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.”

Does the Bible say God will heal chronic pain?

The Bible records God healing many people, and it also records faithful people who stayed unwell. Paul healed others (Acts 19:11-12), yet he left his co-worker Trophimus sick at Miletum (2 Timothy 4:20) and advised Timothy about his “often infirmities” (1 Timothy 5:23). Continuing pain is never presented as a sign of weak faith.

What is a breath prayer?

A breath prayer is a very short prayer, usually one line, repeated throughout the day, often in rhythm with breathing. The practice is ancient: John Cassian’s Conferences, written in the early fifth century, record the desert elder Abba Isaac teaching Psalm 70:1 as a single line to repeat continually, including through headaches and sleepless nights.

Is it wrong to be tired of praying about my pain?

No. The Psalms are full of prayers that complain, plead and ask for relief. Being tired of pain is not a lack of faith, and telling God so plainly is itself a form of trust. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit intercedes “with groanings which cannot be uttered” when we have no words left.

What Bible verse helps with daily pain?

Deuteronomy 33:25, “as thy days, so shall thy strength be,” suits daily pain because it promises strength sized to each day rather than a supply for the whole future. 2 Corinthians 4:16 adds that “though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”

The Pain Doesn’t Get the Last Word on Who You Are

Back to that morning when the pain was up first. It will probably be up first again tomorrow. The prayer does not pretend otherwise.

What it refuses is the pain’s other claim, the quiet one: that this is all you are now. Paul, who once preached “through infirmity of the flesh” (Galatians 4:13), put it this way: “though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Day by day. The same measurement as Asher’s blessing. Strength and renewal, both delivered in daily portions.

If you want somewhere to start today, the Bible Verse for How I Feel tool will match a verse to where you actually are. And if you have been asking for relief for a long time, why unanswered prayer doesn’t mean God left is worth reading next.

What is the one sentence you pray when the pain comes back?
