You have been making choices since you woke up. What to wear. What to answer first. Whether to reply now or later. Which route. Which lunch. Which email can wait.

Now someone asks, “What do you want for dinner?” And you just… can’t. You don’t care. You’ll eat whatever is closest. That flat, foggy “I have nothing left” feeling has a name: decision fatigue.

Here is what it is, what the science really says (it’s more interesting than the popular version), and the simple fix that works either way.

What Is Decision Fatigue?

Decision fatigue is the idea that the more choices you make in a day, the worse your later choices get. You start taking shortcuts. You say yes to things you should refuse. You put things off. Or you pick the easiest option just to make the choosing stop.

Most people know the feeling without needing a study to prove it. You are sharp and patient in the morning. By evening, small choices feel strangely heavy. You snap at people you love over nothing. You scroll instead of deciding what to do with your free time.

Those are real experiences. The question is why they happen. And that is where the story gets surprising.

The Famous Study Everyone Quotes

If you have read about decision fatigue before, you have probably met the “hungry judges.”

In 2011, researchers looked at more than a thousand parole decisions made by judges in Israel. Right after a food break, prisoners had a good chance of being granted parole. As each session wore on, that chance fell and fell, close to zero, until the next break. Then it jumped back up.

The story spread everywhere. Tired judges, worn down by decision after decision, fall back on the safe choice: “no.” It seemed like perfect proof that our minds run out of fuel.

What Happened Next (The Part Most Articles Skip)

Other researchers took a closer look. They talked to lawyers and court staff and learned that the cases were not heard in random order. The board tried to finish all the cases from one prison before a break. Prisoners without a lawyer also tended to come later in a session, and they were less likely to win anyway.

So part of the drop may have had nothing to do with tired judges. It may have been the order of the list. The original authors replied that the pattern still held after some of these checks. A later computer simulation argued the effect was real but much smaller than it first looked. The honest summary: nobody is sure how big the hungry-judge effect really is.

It goes deeper. Decision fatigue grew out of a bigger idea called “ego depletion,” the belief that willpower is like a fuel tank that empties as you use it. That idea was tested by more than twenty labs around the world in 2016, with over two thousand people. The effect they found was almost zero. A second big test in 2021, across 36 labs and more than 3,500 people, found nearly the same thing.

You may also have seen the claim that adults make “35,000 decisions a day.” It gets repeated a lot. Nobody has been able to find where it came from, so it is best left alone.

So Is Decision Fatigue Real or Not?

Here is the fair answer. The feeling is real. The simple “fuel tank” explanation for it is on much shakier ground than most articles admit.

And then there is one finding that changes how you might think about the whole thing.

In 2010, a team from Stanford asked people what they believed about willpower. Some believed it was limited and runs out. Others believed it doesn’t really run out, and that hard effort can even give you energy. After a tiring task, the people who believed willpower runs out did worse. The people who didn’t believe that didn’t show the drop. Later attempts to repeat this have had mixed results, so hold it loosely.

But sit with that for a second. Part of what drains us might not be the choices themselves. It might be the story we tell ourselves about how much we have left.

Other things are almost certainly in the mix too: hunger, poor sleep, stress, and simply how much you care about the choices in front of you. If your mind is still racing at bedtime, our free Why Can’t I Sleep? assessment can help you work out what is actually going on.

The Fix That Works Either Way: Decide Once

Here is the good news. You don’t need to settle the science to feel better. The most useful fix works no matter why evening choices feel hard.

Make some decisions once, so you don’t have to make them again every day.

Barack Obama once told a reporter that he only wore gray or blue suits because he was “trying to pare down decisions.” He said he didn’t want to make choices about what he was eating or wearing, because he had too many other decisions to make. You don’t need to run a country to borrow the idea.

Psychologists have a name for a close cousin of this: “if-then plans.” You decide ahead of time: if this happens, then I will do that. A large 2006 review pulling together close to a hundred studies found these plans helped people follow through on their goals far more than good intentions alone.

A decision you have already made is not a decision you have to make again. It is just something you do.

Simple Ways to Decide Once

Pick a “default dinner” night. Same simple meal every week on the same day. One less nightly debate.

Lay out tomorrow’s clothes tonight, or keep a few go-to outfits. Morning-you will thank you.

Write one if-then rule for your hardest moment. “If I pick up my phone after 9pm, then I put it on the charger in another room.”

Do big choices early. If a decision really matters, try to make it in the morning or after you’ve eaten, not at the end of a long day.

Decide your “no” in advance. Know which requests you will always turn down, so you don’t have to agonize each time.

Keep your values short and written down. When you already know what matters most to you, a lot of small choices answer themselves.

None of these cost money. None need special apps or a therapist. They just move the choosing to a calmer moment.

If this feeling of too-much is a regular part of your week, you might find it helps to understand why feeling overwhelmed can feel like drowning, or what happens in your body during emotional flooding.

An Old Idea Hiding in Plain Sight

There is a very old story about a young man taken far from home to serve in a foreign king’s court. He was offered the king’s own rich food and wine, day after day. But he had made up his mind about it before the food ever reached the table. So when it arrived, there was nothing left to wrestle with. He simply said no, politely, and ate simple food instead.

That is the whole secret, told thousands of years before anyone ran a study. The biggest questions, settled once and settled early, make every small choice after them lighter. Some people find those big questions get settled best of all when they stop carrying them alone, and trust God with the weight of them.

Where This Leaves You Tonight

You are not broken because you can’t pick a dinner at 7pm. You have been choosing all day. And the science suggests the tiredness may be less fixed than it feels.

So tonight, don’t try to fix everything. Pick one thing to decide once. Tomorrow’s clothes. One default meal. One if-then rule. Let tomorrow’s version of you walk into a day with one less question in it.

That’s a small thing. But small things, decided once, add up to a lighter life.

Discussion Question

What’s one everyday choice you’ve already “decided once,” like a set breakfast, a work uniform, or a fixed bedtime, and has it actually made your days easier? Share yours in the comments. People with decision fatigue tend to take shortcuts, put things off, or pick the easiest option. The tired, foggy feeling at the end of a busy day is real, but scientists still disagree about what causes it.

Is decision fatigue scientifically proven?

Decision fatigue is not settled science. It grew out of a theory called ego depletion, which says willpower runs out like fuel. Large tests across many labs in 2016 and 2021 found that effect was close to zero. The famous Israeli parole judge study has also been questioned, because the cases were not heard in random order.

What are the signs of decision fatigue?

Common signs of decision fatigue include feeling unable to make simple choices in the evening, saying “I don’t care, you pick,” putting off decisions, impulse buying, snapping at people, and choosing whatever is easiest. Hunger, poor sleep and stress can make these signs stronger.

How do you fix decision fatigue?

The most practical fix for decision fatigue is to make some decisions once instead of every day. Examples include a set meal on certain nights, laying out clothes the night before, and “if-then” plans such as “if it is 9pm, then my phone goes on the charger.” Making important choices earlier in the day, after eating, also helps.

Is it true that people make 35,000 decisions a day?

The claim that adults make 35,000 decisions a day is repeated widely online, but no one has found a reliable study behind it. It is best treated as an unsourced number rather than a scientific fact.
