It is somewhere past midnight in a Roman colony called Philippi, and a man who runs a prison is standing in the dark with a sword in his hand. An earthquake has just thrown every door open. He assumes his prisoners are gone, and he knows what that will cost him. He is about to end his own life when a voice calls out from inside: “Do thyself no harm: for we are all here” (Acts 16:28).<\/p>\n\n

A few minutes later he is on the floor, shaking, asking two of those prisoners the exact question you typed into a search bar: how do I become one of you? His words were, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). If you have been circling that question for a while, quietly afraid there is a right way to do it and you will get it wrong, his night is worth walking through slowly. It answers the question plainly. And it shows you what the very next morning can look like.<\/p>\n\n

Take the First Step<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The Question Was About Doing. The Answer Was About Someone.<\/h2>\n\n

Notice how he asked it. “What must I do<\/em>?” That is how most of us ask it too. We expect a list. Clean yourself up first. Learn the right words. Understand the whole Bible. Fix the habit. Then apply.<\/p>\n\n

The answer he got was one sentence: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:31).<\/p>\n\n

No list. No test. No waiting period. The answer points away from a task and toward a person. Becoming a Christian, at its heart, is not passing a course about Jesus. It is putting your trust in Jesus himself — who He is, what He did on the cross, and the fact that He is alive — and choosing to follow Him from here.<\/p>\n\n

That is why the old word is “believe on<\/em>,” not just “believe that<\/em>.” You can believe that<\/em> a bridge will hold you and still stand on the bank. Believing on<\/em> it is stepping out and putting your weight there. That is what the jailer was being invited to do. It is what you are being invited to do too.<\/p>\n\n
