It happens in about two seconds.<\/p>\n\n

A message lands. Someone left you out. Someone said a thing in front of everyone. Someone didn’t say thank you, again. And before you have decided anything, something in your chest has already snapped shut.<\/p>\n\n

By the evening you have replayed it ten times. You have written three replies you didn’t send. You are tired, and the other person is probably asleep.<\/p>\n\n

So what does the Bible say about being offended? More than you might expect. And the word it uses tells a story most of us have never heard. It isn’t a word about being hurt. It is a word about being caught.<\/p>\n\n

What Does the Bible Say About Being Offended? Start With the Word<\/h2>\n\n

When the King James Bible says “offended” or “offence” in the New Testament, the Greek behind it is almost always one family of words: skandalon<\/em> (the noun) and skandalizo<\/em> (the verb). You can hear our word “scandal” in it.<\/p>\n\n

But the older picture is much more physical. Thayer’s Greek lexicon defines skandalon<\/em> as “the movable stick or trigger of a trap, trap-stick; a trap, snare.” Strong’s describes it as “a trap-stick (bent sapling).”<\/p>\n\n

Picture a simple hunter’s snare. A young tree is bent down and held under tension. A small stick holds it there. Bait sits on that stick. An animal comes for the bait, touches the stick, and the whole thing springs.<\/p>\n\n

That little stick is the skandalon<\/em>. It is not the thing that hurts you. It is the thing that sets off everything else.<\/p>\n\n

One honest note: by the time the New Testament was written, the word was mostly used in a wider sense, as “a trap” or “a stumbling block.” Writers weren’t picturing a trap-stick every time they used it. But the root picture is real, and once you see it, you notice how well it fits.<\/p>\n\n

Because that is exactly how offence feels. Something small touches you, and a lot of stored-up tension goes off at once.<\/p>\n\n
