Someone you love slides a form across to you. A son who needs a car to get to work. A sister whose rent deposit fell through. A friend who &#8220;just needs someone on the paper.&#8221; There&#8217;s a line at the bottom with your name under it, and a feeling in your stomach you can&#8217;t quite name.<\/p>\n\n<p>So you go looking. <strong>What does the Bible say about cosigning a loan?<\/strong> The honest answer has two halves. The first half is a warning, and it&#8217;s much sterner than most people expect. The second half is one of the most beautiful stories in the whole Bible. You need both halves to make a good decision at that kitchen table.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What Does the Bible Say About Cosigning a Loan?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Bible doesn&#8217;t use the word &#8220;cosign.&#8221; It uses an older word: <em>surety<\/em>. A surety is the person who promises to pay if the borrower can&#8217;t. That&#8217;s exactly what a cosigner does. And the book of Proverbs talks about it more than most people realise. Not once or twice. Six separate times.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here is the first, and the longest:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Proverbs 6:1-2 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>&#8220;Stricken thy hand&#8221; means shaking on the deal. In the ancient world, a handshake was the signature. And notice the word &#8220;snared.&#8221; Proverbs pictures the cosigner as an animal in a trap, caught by nothing but their own words.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then the warnings keep coming:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Proverbs 11:15:<\/strong> &#8220;He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proverbs 17:18:<\/strong> &#8220;A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proverbs 22:26-27:<\/strong> &#8220;Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proverbs 20:16<\/strong> and <strong>Proverbs 27:13<\/strong>, which say almost word for word: &#8220;Take his garment that is surety for a stranger.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>That last pair is easy to skim past, but it&#8217;s the sharpest of the lot. It isn&#8217;t talking to the cosigner. It&#8217;s talking to the <em>lender<\/em>. It says: if someone cosigns, go collect from them. Take their coat as security. In other words, the lender always knew who was really going to pay. Lenders still do. That&#8217;s the whole reason they ask for a cosigner.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>What the Warnings Are Actually Worried About<\/h2>\n\n<p>Read those six passages slowly and a pattern shows up. Proverbs is not saying &#8220;never help anyone.&#8221; Elsewhere the same book praises the generous person again and again. What it&#8217;s worried about is more specific.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s worried about the stranger.<\/strong> Four of the six warnings name a &#8220;stranger&#8221; outright. Promising to pay for someone whose life and habits you don&#8217;t really know is betting on something you can&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s worried about the handshake in a hurry.<\/strong> &#8220;Striketh hands\u2026 in the presence of his friend.&#8221; That&#8217;s the moment everyone is watching and saying no feels rude. Proverbs knows pressure makes promises we&#8217;d never make alone.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>And it&#8217;s worried about the bed.<\/strong> &#8220;If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?&#8221; That&#8217;s the real test. The danger isn&#8217;t signing. The danger is signing for money you do not have. When the borrower stops paying, the debt doesn&#8217;t disappear. It walks across the table to you.<\/p>\n\n<p>There&#8217;s even an exit plan. Proverbs 6:3 says: &#8220;Do this now, my son, deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.&#8221; If you&#8217;ve already signed something you can&#8217;t carry, the Bible&#8217;s advice is not to hide. It&#8217;s to go, swallow your pride, and ask to be released. Today. &#8220;Give not sleep to thine eyes,&#8221; verse 4 adds. Don&#8217;t sleep on it.<\/p>\n\n<p>So far, this sounds like a plain no. But then you turn back to Genesis.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The One Time the Bible Says Yes: Judah and Benjamin<\/h2>\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a famine. Jacob&#8217;s sons have been to Egypt to buy grain, and the powerful Egyptian official (who is secretly their brother Joseph) has told them not to come back without their youngest brother, Benjamin. Jacob refuses. He has already lost Joseph. He won&#8217;t lose Benjamin too.<\/p>\n\n<p>Two brothers step forward. And the difference between them is the whole lesson.<\/p>\n\n<p>First, Reuben: &#8220;Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee&#8221; (Genesis 42:37). Reuben offers a guarantee, but look at what he puts on the line. Not himself. His children. Jacob says no.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then Judah:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Genesis 43:9 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Same word as Proverbs. <em>Surety.<\/em> Judah cosigns for his brother, and the collateral is Judah. This time, Jacob agrees.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then the debt comes due. In Egypt, a silver cup is planted in Benjamin&#8217;s sack. Benjamin is sentenced to stay as a slave. This is the exact moment Proverbs warned about, when the borrower can&#8217;t pay and the cosigner is called. Judah doesn&#8217;t run. He steps forward and says:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father\u2026 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Genesis 44:32-33 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Take me instead. That&#8217;s what a real surety sounds like. It&#8217;s that speech, not the silver cup, that finally breaks Joseph and makes him reveal who he is.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the detail almost everyone misses. A few chapters earlier, in Genesis 38, Judah made a different kind of pledge. He handed over his signet, his bracelets and his staff as a <em>pledge<\/em> to a woman he didn&#8217;t know, and that pledge was later used to expose him. In Hebrew, &#8220;pledge&#8221; there and &#8220;surety&#8221; in Genesis 43 come from the same root word. The man whose careless pledge brought him shame became the man who offered himself as the pledge. Judah didn&#8217;t just learn to cosign better. He learned to put himself on the line instead of his things, or his children, or someone else.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Surety of a Better Testament<\/h2>\n\n<p>Now the Bible does something remarkable with that little word. Centuries later, the writer of Hebrews reaches for it to describe Jesus:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Hebrews 7:22 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The Greek word behind &#8220;surety&#8221; there appears nowhere else in the New Testament. Of all the words Hebrews could have chosen, it picked the cosigner&#8217;s word.<\/p>\n\n<p>And people had been asking for exactly that for a long time. In the middle of his suffering, Job cries out: &#8220;Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?&#8221; (Job 17:3). Who will shake on it for me? The psalmist prays the same thing: &#8220;Be surety for thy servant for good&#8221; (Psalm 119:122). Paul even acts it out in a tiny letter about a runaway slave named Onesimus: &#8220;If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account&#8221; (Philemon 18).<\/p>\n\n<p>So here is where the two halves of the Bible meet. Proverbs is right. Most of us cannot safely cosign, because most of us cannot cover the whole debt if it falls on us. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s a trap. But there is one surety who <em>can<\/em> cover all of it. Like Judah, Jesus didn&#8217;t put up someone else. He put up Himself. And unlike Judah, Jesus had enough to pay everything.<\/p>\n\n<p>That changes how you sit at the kitchen table. You don&#8217;t have to be anyone&#8217;s saviour. That job is already taken. Which means you are free to say a loving no, or a careful yes, without believing everything depends on you.<\/p>\n\n<h2>So Should a Christian Cosign a Loan?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Bible never calls cosigning a sin. But Proverbs and Judah together give you a clear test. Before you sign, ask:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Could I pay all of it, by myself, without losing my &#8220;bed&#8221;?<\/strong> Not &#8220;they&#8217;ll probably be fine.&#8221; All of it. If the answer is no, Proverbs 22:27 is talking to you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Am I being pressured in the moment?<\/strong> &#8220;In the presence of his friend&#8221; is where the bad signatures happen. Ask for a day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is this someone I truly know?<\/strong> Four of the six warnings are about strangers. Knowing someone&#8217;s habits is different from loving them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Am I putting up only what&#8217;s mine to lose?<\/strong> Reuben offered his children. Don&#8217;t pledge money your spouse, your kids or your own future are counting on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Would a gift be kinder?<\/strong> If you can afford to cover the debt, you may be able to afford to just give a smaller amount outright, with no strings attached. That&#8217;s love that counted the cost. And if you have to say no, you can say it gently and still stay close.
