The email you haven&#8217;t answered. The form you haven&#8217;t filled in. The conversation you keep meaning to have. It isn&#8217;t hard, exactly. You could do it in twenty minutes. But every day you look at it, and every day you decide that today isn&#8217;t quite the right day.<\/p>\n\n<p>So what does the Bible say about procrastination? Most people expect a scolding about laziness and a lecture about ants. But there is a verse in Ecclesiastes that describes the kind of putting-off most of us actually do, and it isn&#8217;t laziness at all. It is waiting. Watching. Hoping conditions will get better before you start.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.&#8221; <br>\u2014 Ecclesiastes 11:4 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>That is not a picture of someone asleep on the couch. It is a picture of someone standing at the edge of a field, bag of seed in hand, wide awake, looking up at the sky. Waiting for the wind to be right.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Procrastination Isn&#8217;t Always Laziness<\/h2>\n\n<p>This matches what researchers have found. In a well-known 2013 paper, psychologists Fuschia Sirois and Timothy Pychyl argued that procrastination &#8220;has a great deal to do with short-term mood repair and emotion regulation.&#8221; Put simply: we mostly put off tasks that make us feel bad \u2014 boring, frustrating, confusing or scary ones. Avoiding the task makes the bad feeling go away for a little while. They quote an earlier line from researchers Dianne Tice and Ellen Bratslavsky that sums it up: &#8220;we give in to feel good.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>The same paper describes an experiment by Tice, Bratslavsky and Roy Baumeister. People who were first put in a bad mood spent more time procrastinating instead of preparing for the next task. The bad feeling came first. The delay followed.<\/p>\n\n<p>One honest caveat, because it matters: the researchers don&#8217;t say mood is the <em>only<\/em> cause. They also point to personality traits like self-discipline and impulsiveness. But the big picture is clear enough. A lot of procrastination is not a time problem. It is a feelings problem. And the feeling underneath is very often some kind of worry. <em>What if I get it wrong? What if it doesn&#8217;t work? Start With Ecclesiastes 11:4<\/h2>\n\n<p>Ecclesiastes 11:4 makes more sense when you picture the farmer. In the ancient world, seed was often scattered by hand. A strong wind could carry it off. Heavy clouds at harvest could spoil the grain. So watching the weather wasn&#8217;t foolish. It was careful. It was sensible.<\/p>\n\n<p>And that is exactly the point. The person in this verse isn&#8217;t lazy. They&#8217;re <em>responsible<\/em>. They&#8217;re just waiting for a day with no risk in it. The verse says that day never comes. The person who waits for perfect wind never plants anything. The person who waits for a clear sky never brings anything in.<\/p>\n\n<p>Now look at the verse right before it:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.&#8221; <br>\u2014 Ecclesiastes 11:3 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The clouds will rain when they are full. The tree will fall where it falls. None of it waits for you, and none of it changes because you are watching. The weather is going to do what the weather does. Your watching adds nothing to it. It only takes away your planting day.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Even the &#8220;Lazy&#8221; Verses Are About Fear<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here is something that surprised me while checking these passages. The famous Proverbs about the sluggard \u2014 the ones people quote at procrastinators \u2014 are also full of excuses that sound like fear and bad conditions.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.&#8221; <br>\u2014 Proverbs 20:4 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.&#8221; <br>\u2014 Proverbs 22:13 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s too cold. There might be a lion out there. The sluggard always has a reason, and the reason is always about conditions outside. The Bible&#8217;s picture of the person who doesn&#8217;t get things done is not a person who doesn&#8217;t care. It is a person who has found a danger that makes waiting feel wise.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is the voice in your head too. <em>Not today, I&#8217;m too tired to do it well. Not yet, I need more information. Not now, the timing is off.<\/em> Sometimes those are true. Read all of Ecclesiastes 11 and one little phrase keeps coming back: <strong>&#8220;thou knowest not.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Verse 2: &#8220;thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Verse 5: &#8220;thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Verse 6: &#8220;thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Three times, the writer admits you can&#8217;t know how it will turn out. And here is the surprise. Not knowing is never given as a reason to wait. It is given as the reason to <em>start<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.&#8221; <br>\u2014 Ecclesiastes 11:6 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>We usually think: <em>I don&#8217;t know if this will work, so I&#8217;ll wait until I&#8217;m sure.<\/em> Ecclesiastes flips it: <em>You don&#8217;t know which one will work, so plant in the morning, and plant again in the evening.<\/em> You were never going to be sure. God knows how the seed grows. You don&#8217;t. That isn&#8217;t bad news. It means the outcome was never your job. The sowing is.<\/p>\n\n<p>There is freedom in that. Procrastination often hides a quiet belief that we have to get the result right before we&#8217;re allowed to begin. You are allowed to sow a small, imperfect handful and leave the growing to God.<\/p>\n\n<h2>How to Stop Watching the Wind<\/h2>\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t need a new planner or a big burst of willpower. You need one handful of seed, thrown today, into imperfect weather.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Actions to Take Today<\/h3>\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Name the lion.<\/strong> Take the one task you&#8217;ve been avoiding and finish this sentence out loud or on paper: &#8220;I haven&#8217;t done this because I&#8217;m afraid that ___.&#8221; Seeing the real reason often shrinks it. (2 minutes)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sow one handful.<\/strong> Do the smallest first piece of the task right now \u2014 open the document, write the first line of the email, look up the phone number. Don&#8217;t finish it. Just break the ground. (5 minutes)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plant in the evening too.<\/strong> Before bed tonight, do one more small piece. Ecclesiastes 11:6 says morning <em>and<\/em> evening. Two small starts beat one perfect plan that never happens. I don&#8217;t know which of my efforts will grow \u2014 but You do, and I&#8217;m tired of waiting to be sure. Give me the courage to throw one small handful today and trust You with the rest.
