It is less than one million years old. That makes it the youngest planet ever found outside our solar system. For a planet, that is not young. That is a newborn still in the delivery room.<\/p>\n\n<p>The discovery was published on 16 September 2026 in <em>The Astrophysical Journal Letters<\/em>. The team was led by Andrea Bernardi, a doctoral student at Diego Portales University in Chile.<\/p>\n\n<p>And the most honest line in the whole story did not come from a headline. It came from one of the scientists, admitting what their own ideas cannot yet explain.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What Is the Youngest Planet Ever Found?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The youngest planet ever found is Elias 2-24 b. If our Sun were a grown adult, this planet would be only a few days old.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>It Was Hiding in Old Data the Whole Time<\/h2>\n\n<p>This is the part of the story most people will miss.<\/p>\n\n<p>Nobody pointed a new telescope at this star and saw a planet pop into view. The planet was already sitting in pictures taken years ago.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2018, astronomer Alice Zurlo looked at the star Elias 2-24 with the Keck Observatory in Hawaii. The pictures showed a very faint smudge. It was hard to tell what it was. A faint spot like that can be a trick of the camera. It can be a star far in the background. Or it can be a planet.<\/p>\n\n<p>Years later, Bernardi went back into the Keck archive, the library where old telescope pictures are stored. Using newer ways of cleaning up the images, the faint smudge came into focus. The same spot showed up again in pictures from 2020.<\/p>\n\n<p>That second look mattered. By comparing 2018 with 2020, the team could see how the object moved. It moved the way a planet circling its star should move. A background star would not do that. A camera flaw would not do that.<\/p>\n\n<p>Keck&#8217;s chief scientist, John O&#8217;Meara, put it simply: &#8220;Astronomical data can have a remarkably long shelf life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>The answer was there for years. It just needed someone to look again, more carefully.<\/p>\n\n<h2>It Was Exactly Where the Gap Said It Would Be<\/h2>\n\n<p>The disk around Elias 2-24 is not smooth. It has bright rings, with dark gaps between them, like the grooves on an old record.<\/p>\n\n<p>For years, astronomers have suspected that young planets carve those gaps. A growing planet sweeps up the dust along its path, and leaves an empty lane behind. But suspecting it and seeing it are two very different things.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;The planets should be found within the gaps, since they are carving them,&#8221; Bernardi said. &#8220;And that&#8217;s exactly where we found Elias 2-24 b.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>To be sure, the team did not rely on one telescope. The universe keeps building giants in ways we did not expect.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Why This Planet Puzzles the Astronomers<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here is the problem. Giant planets are supposed to take time to build.<\/p>\n\n<p>The usual picture goes like this. Dust clumps into pebbles. Pebbles clump into rocks. Rocks grow into a solid core. Then the core gets heavy enough to pull in huge amounts of gas. That takes a long time, and it is slower the farther out you go, where material is spread thin.<\/p>\n\n<p>Before this discovery, the record for youngest planet was a four-way tie. Two planets circle a star called PDS 70. Two more circle a star called WISPIT 2. All four are more than 5 million years old.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even those were already hard to explain. Lucas Cieza, a co-author from Chile&#8217;s Institute of Astrophysical Studies, said it plainly:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our planet-formation models already struggled to explain the previous record holders for the youngest known planet.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Now there is a Jupiter-sized planet, far out from its star, that is less than a fifth of their age.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Elias 2-24 b shows us that even our best planet-formation models are still missing some important processes,&#8221; Cieza said.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is worth reading that sentence slowly. It does not say science is wrong. It does not say the models are useless. It says they are incomplete. Something real is happening out there that the best ideas we have do not yet cover. That is what careful people sound like at the edge of what they know.<\/p>\n\n<p>And the team is candid about how close to that edge they are. &#8220;Elias 2-24 b is at the limit of what current telescopes can detect,&#8221; Bernardi said. They plan to study its light closely to learn about its air, its temperature, its true weight, and how fast it is still feeding on the disk around it.<\/p>\n\n<p>Cieza thinks there are many more like it out there. &#8220;The galaxy churns out new stars and planets continuously, so there are many in every stage of evolution,&#8221; he said. We just cannot see most of them yet.<\/p>\n\n<p>So for now, Elias 2-24 b is a window. &#8220;In a way, we&#8217;re observing a much younger version of a planetary system like our own,&#8221; Cieza said.
