There’s a box on some forms that just says “Religion.” A hospital intake sheet, a survey, a census. Plenty of people write “Christian” without a second thought. And some people freeze with the pen over the line, because they’re not sure they’ve earned the word. They believe something about Jesus. They pray sometimes. But they don’t know if that’s what a Christian actually is, or if it takes more than that.<\/p>\n\n

If you searched “what does it mean to be a Christian,” you might be standing right there. Maybe you just said yes to Jesus. Maybe you grew up with the label and it feels hollow. Here’s something that may help: the Bible barely uses the word at all. And the first time it shows up, it wasn’t a title anyone applied for. It was a nickname other people gave, because of something they kept noticing.<\/p>\n\n

A Word the Bible Uses Only Three Times<\/h2>\n\n

In the King James Bible, the word “Christian” appears in just three verses. That’s it. The first is in the book of Acts, in a city called Antioch, where a young church had grown up in the years after Jesus rose from the dead. Barnabas and Saul (later known as Paul) spent a year there teaching:<\/p>\n\n

“And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” — Acts 11:26<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Read it slowly. They were already disciples. They had been gathering and learning for “a whole year.” Then<\/em> they were called Christians. Acts doesn’t tell us who came up with the name. But notice how the book usually describes the followers of Jesus: disciples, brethren, and people “of this way” (Acts 9:2). “Christian” seems to have been the name that stuck from the outside.<\/p>\n\n

The other two uses fit that pattern. A king named Agrippa, after hearing Paul tell his story, said, “Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian” (Acts 26:28). And Peter wrote to believers who were being treated badly for their faith: “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf” (1 Peter 4:16). In both places, it’s the word other people used about them.<\/p>\n\n

What the Neighbors Were Noticing<\/h2>\n\n

The word itself holds a clue. It’s built on “Christ,” with an ending that labels people by who they belong to. The Gospels use the same kind of word for a group called the “Herodians” (Mark 3:6), people known for their tie to King Herod. So in plain words, “Christian” meant something like “the Christ people.”<\/strong> Folks you couldn’t describe without mentioning Jesus.<\/p>\n\n

That tells you what outsiders saw. Not a club. Not a set of opinions. A group of ordinary people whose lives kept pointing back to one person. Acts records the same thing happening in Jerusalem, when the city leaders looked at two fishermen who spoke with surprising courage:<\/p>\n\n

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” — Acts 4:13<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

“They had been with Jesus.” No degrees. No titles. Just time spent with him, and it showed.<\/p>\n\n

Jesus’s First Job Description Was “Be With Me”<\/h2>\n\n

This lines up with how Jesus started it all. When he chose the twelve, Mark gives the reasons in order:<\/p>\n\n

“And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,” — Mark 3:14<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Being with him came first. The sending came after. Before they did anything for Jesus, they walked with him, ate with him, listened to him, and asked him their confused questions. And Jesus told them the one thing that would make outsiders recognize them:<\/p>\n\n

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” — John 13:35<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

So when you put the Bible’s own pieces together, a simple answer comes out. To be a Christian is to belong to Jesus: to trust him, to spend your days with him, and to slowly start looking like him, especially in how you love people.<\/strong> The name is what it looks like from across the street.<\/p>\n\n
