That part is settled. Sometime in the coming weeks or months, it will drop into Earth&#8217;s air and burn up.<\/p>\n\n<p>So here is the strange part. In late August, the people who run Swift did something that will make it fall sooner. They switched it back on.<\/p>\n\n<p>They knew what it would cost. They did it anyway. And the reason they did it says something about how to spend time that is running out.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What Happened to the Swift Telescope?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Swift is a NASA space telescope that has circled Earth since November 2004. It hunts gamma-ray bursts, which NASA calls the most powerful explosions in the universe. They flash up without warning, anywhere in the sky, and fade fast. Swift was built to spot one, swing around, and catch it before it is gone.<\/p>\n\n<p>But Swift&#8217;s orbit has been sinking. The sun has been very active, and an active sun heats and puffs up the top of Earth&#8217;s air. Puffier air means more drag. More drag means Swift slows down and drops lower.<\/p>\n\n<p>This year, NASA tried to save it. A company called Katalyst Space built a small robot spacecraft named LINK to grab Swift and push it higher. We covered <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/bible-resources\/bible-and-science\/nasa-swift-observatory-rescue-mission-trouble\/\">the rescue, and the moment the rescuer broke too<\/a>, back in August. The short version: LINK launched on July 3, had trouble controlling which way it was pointing, and never recovered well enough. On August 19, NASA said LINK would not capture or boost Swift after all.<\/p>\n\n<p>NASA now expects Swift to come down later in 2026.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>How Swift Went Blind to Buy Time<\/h2>\n\n<p>What most people missed is how hard the team had already fought for extra days.<\/p>\n\n<p>In February, they stopped using two of Swift&#8217;s three telescopes: the X-ray telescope and the ultraviolet and optical telescope. Swift stopped turning to look at things. Instead, it held itself in one careful position that let it slip through the thin air with as little drag as possible. The idea was simple. Stay up long enough for the rescue to arrive.<\/p>\n\n<p>In April, they went further. They switched off the Burst Alert Telescope too, the very instrument that spots the bursts in the first place. That lowered how much power Swift needed, so the team could turn its solar panels into a position that cut drag even more.<\/p>\n\n<p>Think about what that means. The telescope gave up its eyes to buy time. From April on, one of the best burst-catchers ever built sat in the sky and did not look at anything at all.<\/p>\n\n<p>It was a smart trade, as long as a rescue was coming.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Why Switching Swift Back On Brings the End Closer<\/h2>\n\n<p>Then the rescue was called off. And the team made a new choice.<\/p>\n\n<p>On August 26, they turned the X-ray and ultraviolet-optical telescopes back on. The Burst Alert Telescope was expected to follow within a few weeks. Swift started turning to look at things again.<\/p>\n\n<p>Looking costs something. To point at a target, Swift has to leave its low-drag position and show more of itself to the thin air. More drag means a faster fall.<\/p>\n\n<p>NASA was plain about it. Below about 300 kilometres (185 miles), Swift becomes very hard to run. In quiet, low-drag mode, the team had expected it to stay above that line until October. With science back on, NASA said the team &#8220;anticipates Swift will reach that milestone sometime in the next one to two months.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Nobody has put an exact number on how much time the choice costs. It may only be a matter of weeks. But the direction is clear: more science, less time.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Rescuer Got Close Enough to See It<\/h2>\n\n<p>There is one more detail that did not make many headlines. LINK did not simply give up and leave. It kept flying, testing its robot arms and firing its thrusters. In early September, NASA reported that LINK had come within 12 to 15 kilometres (7.5 to 9 miles) of Swift.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is close. In space terms, it is the same neighbourhood. But NASA says LINK will not make any closer approach, and the team expects LINK itself to drop out of orbit within a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n<p>So the rescue ship and the telescope it came to save are both falling now. They got close. They never touched.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What Swift Did With Almost 22 Years<\/h2>\n\n<p>It helps to know what is being spent here.<\/p>\n\n<p>By 2019, Swift had caught more than 1,400 gamma-ray bursts. Each one is a flash from a giant star collapsing, or from two dead stars crashing together, often billions of light-years away. When Swift saw one, it could quickly swing its other telescopes toward it and alert observatories on the ground, so astronomers everywhere could look before the light faded.<\/p>\n\n<p>The telescope also carries a name. In 2018, NASA renamed it the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, after the scientist who helped develop the mission and led it as its first principal investigator. Gehrels died in 2017. The telescope he helped build has kept working for nearly a decade without him.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Time Bought for a Rescue That Is Not Coming<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here is the part worth sitting with.<\/p>\n\n<p>The quiet months made sense for one reason: something was coming. Every day Swift stayed high was a day closer to LINK arriving. The waiting had a point.<\/p>\n\n<p>Once the rescue was gone, the waiting lost its point. Swift could still have stayed quiet, holding its careful position, stretching its last weeks as far as they would go. It would have fallen anyway, just a little later, having seen nothing.<\/p>\n\n<p>Its team decided that extra time with nothing to spend it on was not really worth having. They chose to spend the time Swift had left on the work it was made for. When the rescue ended, Shawn Domagal-Goldman, who directs NASA&#8217;s astrophysics division, said simply: &#8220;We were all hoping for more science from Swift.&#8221; Now they are getting a little of it anyway.<\/p>\n\n<p>Most of us know the pull of the low-drag position. When something is ending, a job, a season of life, a chapter we loved, the instinct is to go quiet and protect what is left. Don&#8217;t move. Don&#8217;t spend anything. Make it last.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sometimes that is wise. If help is really coming, hold on. But sometimes holding on has turned into just waiting, and nothing is coming. Swift&#8217;s team saw the difference, and chose the work.<\/p>\n\n<h2>A Very Old Letter About the Same Choice<\/h2>\n\n<p>It brings to mind a letter written nearly two thousand years ago by a man in a Roman prison. He knew his time was nearly up, and he said so plainly. He was not getting out.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then, a few lines later in the same letter, he asked a friend to hurry and come, and to bring him three things: the coat he had left behind in another town, his books, and above all his parchments.<\/p>\n\n<p>He did not ask for more time. He asked for his books. A man who could count what he had left in weeks wanted to keep reading, keep writing, keep working to the end.<\/p>\n\n<p>That letter ended up in the Bible, and the man who wrote it believed his life belonged to God. Maybe that is why he could spend his last days that way. When your time is not really yours to hoard, the question stops being &#8220;how do I make it last?&#8221; and becomes &#8220;what is it for?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<h2>Still Looking<\/h2>\n\n<p>Swift is still up there tonight, lower than it has ever been, turning to look at the sky again. Nobody knows the exact day it will come down. When it does, it will fall having spent its last weeks doing what it was built to do.<\/p>\n\n<p>And what it sees will not vanish with it. Everything Swift catches goes into the record, for astronomers to keep studying long after the telescope is gone.
