The same thing you prayed about last year, and the year before that. Nothing has moved. The job, the test result, the person who is still not speaking to you \u2014 whatever it is, it is not here.<\/p>\n\n<p>And somewhere in your mind sits a verse people quote at moments exactly like this one: <em>faith is the substance of things hoped for<\/em>. It is meant to comfort. Often it does the opposite \u2014 it sounds like a test you are failing.<\/p>\n\n<p>So let us take the <strong>Hebrews 11:1 meaning<\/strong> apart slowly. The Greek word underneath &#8220;substance&#8221; is doing something far more solid than a pep talk. And the chapter this verse opens ends in a place almost nobody quotes.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Hebrews 11:1 Meaning: What the Verse Actually Says<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here it is, exactly as the King James Version has it:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.&#8221; \u2014 Hebrews 11:1, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Two nouns carry the whole sentence: <em>substance<\/em> and <em>evidence<\/em>. Both are hard, concrete words. Neither one is a feeling.<\/p>\n\n<p>And notice what the verse does not say. It does not say faith is being certain the thing will happen. It does not say faith is expecting hard enough. It does not mention the strength of your belief at all. It says faith <em>is<\/em> something \u2014 that faith itself is the substance, and faith itself is the evidence.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is a strange sentence, and it is worth slowing down for. This is the nearest thing to a definition of faith anywhere in the New Testament. It is worth getting right.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>The Word Under &#8220;Substance&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Greek word is <em>hypostasis<\/em>. It is built from two pieces: <em>hypo<\/em>, meaning under, and a form of <em>stasis<\/em>, meaning standing. Put them together and you get the thing that stands underneath.<\/p>\n\n<p>A foundation. A base. The part of a structure that carries weight from below and never gets photographed.<\/p>\n\n<p>What makes this more than a word-study curiosity is that the same letter uses the same word two other times \u2014 and the King James translators rendered it differently each time.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the opening paragraph, describing Christ:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power&#8230;&#8221; \u2014 Hebrews 1:3, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>There, <em>hypostasis<\/em> is translated &#8220;person&#8221; \u2014 the underlying reality of God, the thing that is actually there.<\/p>\n\n<p>Two chapters later, describing the readers:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;&#8221; \u2014 Hebrews 3:14, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>There, the same word is translated &#8220;confidence&#8221; \u2014 something a struggling person is told to hold on to.<\/p>\n\n<p>One word, three renderings, inside one short letter: reality, confidence, substance. Modern translations land somewhere between them at 11:1. The English Standard Version says &#8220;the assurance of things hoped for.&#8221; The New International Version says &#8220;confidence in what we hope for.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>In ordinary Greek documents of that period the word could also carry a plain legal sense \u2014 the paperwork that establishes a claim on something. Scholars disagree about how much of that the writer of Hebrews had in mind, so it is not worth building on. But look at the direction every one of these senses points. Not a mood. A basis. Something with weight already sitting under you.<\/p>\n\n<h2>&#8220;Evidence&#8221; Is a Courtroom Word<\/h2>\n\n<p>The second noun is <em>elenchos<\/em>, and the KJV&#8217;s &#8220;evidence&#8221; is a good, honest choice. In Greek it is the word for proof \u2014 the kind produced by testing something, questioning it, bringing it out into the open where it can be examined. It is the word used for cross-examination.<\/p>\n\n<p>The English Standard Version translates it &#8220;conviction,&#8221; which catches the other half of it: not just the proof itself, but what the proof does to the person who sees it.<\/p>\n\n<p>Read the verse again with both words carrying their weight:<\/p>\n\n<p>Faith is the foundation under the things you are still hoping for. Faith is the proof that goes on functioning as proof when there is nothing in front of your eyes to point at.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is not the absence of evidence. That is the verse saying faith takes up the job evidence usually does.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Who This Was Written To<\/h2>\n\n<p>Chapter divisions came centuries after the letter was written, and this one lands in an unhelpful place. Hebrews 11:1 is not the start of a fresh topic. It is the next sentence in an argument that has been building for a page.<\/p>\n\n<p>Look at who is being addressed. A few paragraphs earlier the writer reminds them what they have already been through \u2014 public abuse, prison visits, and this:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.&#8221; \u2014 Hebrews 10:34, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Their belongings had been taken from them. Not a metaphor. Actual property, actually gone.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then, immediately before our verse:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.&#8221; \u2014 Hebrews 10:38, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>These people were not sitting in a comfortable room enjoying a lecture on the nature of belief. They were tired, they had lost things, and some of them were quietly getting ready to walk away. That is who the definition of faith is handed to. It was written for people at the end of their patience, which may be why it has held up so well for everyone since. The same letter turns frightening a chapter earlier, and that passage has the same habit of being quoted without its surroundings \u2014 we read it in context in <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/spiritual-devotional\/hebrews-6-4-6-explained\/\">Hebrews 6:4-6 explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Then Read How the Chapter Ends<\/h2>\n\n<p>Verse 1 is the door into the most famous list in the letter. Abel. Noah. Abraham. Sarah. Moses. Rahab. Verse after verse begins with the same two words \u2014 <em>by faith<\/em> \u2014 and each one names someone who trusted God and acted on it.<\/p>\n\n<p>It reads like a highlight reel. Which is exactly why the middle of the chapter stops you cold:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.&#8221; \u2014 Hebrews 11:13, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Died. Not having received. Saw it from a distance, and that was the whole of it.<\/p>\n\n<p>And the chapter does not soften on the way out. After the entire list, after every &#8220;by faith,&#8221; here is the closing verdict:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.&#8221; \u2014 Hebrews 11:39-40, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote><p><strong>The chapter people quote to prove that faith gets you the thing ends by saying plainly that they never got the thing.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>This is the part that changes what verse 1 means. If faith were certainty that the outcome is coming, then chapter 11 is a chapter full of people whose faith did not work. The writer clearly does not think that. He calls them the ones who &#8220;obtained a good report&#8221; in the same sentence where he says they received not the promise.<\/p>\n\n<p>So the substance was never the arrival of the thing. The foundation under them was God, and it held all the way through a life in which nothing they were promised showed up.<\/p>\n\n<p>Abraham is the name this chapter leans on hardest, and he is also the name at the centre of the New Testament&#8217;s other argument about faith \u2014 the one people think contradicts this one. It does not, and we walked through why in <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/bible-resources\/bible-answers\/faith-without-works-is-dead\/\">faith without works is dead<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What This Changes on an Ordinary Day<\/h2>\n\n<p>If you have been treating your faith as a measuring instrument \u2014 checking how sure you feel, and reading a bad result as a spiritual failure \u2014 this verse quietly takes that job away from you.<\/p>\n\n<p>Feelings move. They move with sleep, with news, with how the week went, with whether you have eaten. If faith were the same thing as feeling certain, then faith would be strongest on the good days and gone by the difficult ones. A foundation is not like that. Nobody stands in a room checking whether they feel supported by the floor.<\/p>\n\n<p>There is a second thing worth saying out loud, because it is the honest half. Hebrews 11 does not promise that waiting ends. It shows a long line of people for whom it did not end, and it calls them the good report. Waiting without an answer is not evidence that you have been left out. Read the definition, then read the verdict on everyone who lived it. Doing it in that order is what makes the point land, and no verse graphic will ever do it for you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write down the one thing you are still waiting on.<\/strong> One line on paper or in your phone. Not a prayer request list \u2014 the actual thing. Naming it stops it running quietly in the background all day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask one honest question of someone who has waited longer than you.<\/strong> An older believer, a relative, anyone whose life has had a long unanswered stretch in it. Ask what carried them. This is the one thing on this list you cannot get from a book, and most people are glad to be asked.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2>Journaling Prompts<\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Where have you been reading a lack of feeling as a lack of faith? What would it mean to keep standing on the foundation even if the answer never arrives in your lifetime \u2014 and what does your honest reaction to that question tell you?<\/li>\n<li>Hebrews 11 calls people &#8220;strangers and pilgrims&#8221; who saw the promise from a distance. I have been measuring my faith by how sure I feel, and lately I do not feel sure of much. Thank you that the ones you called faithful died still waiting, and you did not think less of them for it.
