A video came up, or somebody at work said something about payment systems and the end of the world. Now it is late and you are still awake, and the question underneath is not really a Bible question at all. It is this: <em>what if it happens to me and I do not even notice?<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>That fear deserves to be taken seriously, because it is real, and a lot of people are making money from it. It also deserves to be read carefully. Because the book everybody is quoting answers it \u2014 and the answer is much calmer than the fear.<\/p>\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s read what Revelation actually says about the mark of the beast. In order. Without adding anything to it.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What Revelation 13 says about the mark of the beast<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here is the passage everything is built on:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.&#8221; <em>(Revelation 13:16-17, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Two things in those sentences get skipped almost every time.<\/p>\n\n<p>First, the mark goes on the right hand <em>or<\/em> the forehead. Not a specific object. A place on a person.<\/p>\n\n<p>Second \u2014 and this is the part that changes everything \u2014 look at what the mark is sitting beside in the same breath: &#8220;the mark, <strong>or the name<\/strong> of the beast, or the number <strong>of his name<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>The mark is a name. In the text itself, it is not a device and it is not a technology. It is an answer to a question. The question is: <em>whose are you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>The word behind &#8220;mark&#8221; is a stamp \u2014 and the New Testament uses it one other time<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Greek word here is <em>charagma<\/em>. Long before it had anything to do with the end of the world, it was an ordinary working word. It meant the impress a die leaves on a coin. The stamp of a seal pressed into a document. The brand an owner burned into property.<\/p>\n\n<p>A <em>charagma<\/em> told you who something belonged to. It was made by hand. And it was pressed on from the outside.<\/p>\n\n<p>The New Testament uses that word eight times. Seven of them are in Revelation. The eighth is easy to miss, and it opens the whole thing up.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is in Acts 17, in Athens. Paul is standing in a city full of statues, and he says:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man&#8217;s device.&#8221; <em>(Acts 17:29, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The word behind &#8220;graven&#8221; is <em>charagma<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>So the one time this word appears outside Revelation, it describes something people carved and stamped with their own hands \u2014 and then bowed down to. That is what a <em>charagma<\/em> is. A maker&#8217;s mark. It says whose workshop you came out of.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Revelation seals God&#8217;s people six chapters before the mark appears<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here is the detail that does the most work, and it costs you nothing to check. Open the book and read it in order. Chapter 7 comes before chapter 13.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.&#8221; <em>(Revelation 7:3, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Read that again slowly.<\/p>\n\n<p>Six chapters before the beast marks anybody, God has already marked people. In the forehead. The same place. And God is the one doing it.<\/p>\n\n<p>It does not stop there. In chapter 14, a crowd is standing with the Lamb:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father&#8217;s name written in their foreheads.&#8221; <em>(Revelation 14:1, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>And at the very end of the book, describing the servants of God forever:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.&#8221; <em>(Revelation 22:4, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Count them. Revelation describes marks in the forehead four times, and three of those marks belong to God.<\/p>\n\n<p>The beast&#8217;s mark is not the original. It is the copy. It arrives in the story after the seal, and it is doing an imitation of it.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Nobody in Revelation receives the mark by accident<\/h2>\n\n<p>The very next chapter says plainly what receiving the mark involves:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,&#8221; <em>(Revelation 14:9, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Worship first. Then the mark.<\/p>\n\n<p>The two are never pulled apart in the text. When the book later describes the people who refused it, the same pairing shows up in reverse \u2014 those &#8220;which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands&#8221; (Revelation 20:4).<\/p>\n\n<p>Not a form somebody signed without reading it. Not a purchase made in a hurry. Worship. A knowing yes to something you already know is not God.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is not a loophole and it is not wishful reading. It is simply what the sentences say, every single time they appear.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What about 666?<\/h2>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.&#8221; <em>(Revelation 13:18, KJV)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Here is where honesty matters more than certainty. And here is where almost everything you have heard goes further than the evidence does.<\/p>\n\n<p>Around AD 180, a bishop named Irenaeus sat down and tried to work the number out. He is one of the earliest Christian writers on this whose work survives, and he took it seriously. He found three names in Greek that add up to 666, and he listed them: Euanthas, Lateinos, and Teitan.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then he refused to choose. His own words:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is therefore more certain, and less hazardous, to await the fulfilment of the prophecy, than to be making surmises, and casting about for any names that may present themselves.&#8221; <em>(Irenaeus, Against Heresies, Book V, ch. 30)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>He said he would not risk pronouncing positively on the name of the antichrist at all.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sit with that for a second. The earliest surviving Christian attempt to decode 666 ended in a deliberate decision <em>not<\/em> to decode it. Every confident identification since has been less careful than the man who was closest to it.<\/p>\n\n<p>There is one more piece of honesty owed here. Irenaeus also mentioned that some copies of Revelation read 616 instead of 666, and he put that down to a copyist slipping. Centuries later, a papyrus copy of Revelation was recovered from the sands of Egypt \u2014 catalogued as P115, dated by scholars to the third century, and one of the oldest surviving witnesses we have to these chapters.<\/p>\n\n<p>It reads 616.<\/p>\n\n<p>Most manuscripts do read 666, and 666 is the reading printed in almost every Bible you will ever pick up. But the oldest copy we have of that verse does not, and anyone who tells you the number is beyond all question has not told you that part. Scholars have proposed that both figures could come from spelling &#8220;Nero Caesar&#8221; in Hebrew letters, where a small change in spelling shifts the total. That is a proposal with real evidence behind it. It is not a settled fact, and this article is not going to pretend it is.<\/p>\n\n<p>If that unsettles you, it shouldn&#8217;t. It is the same reason we can trust the rest of it: we can see the copies, compare them, and say plainly where they differ. That is worth understanding on its own \u2014 it is <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/bible-resources\/bible-answers\/who-wrote-the-bible\/\">how the Bible actually came to us<\/a>, and the messiness is the convincing part.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The order of the book is the answer to the fear<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here is what changes when you read Revelation in order instead of in fragments.<\/p>\n\n<p>Every mark in this book is a mark of ownership. That is what the word means. And the first one described is God&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n<p>The fear says: <em>something could be done to me, from the outside, and I would lose God without meaning to.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>The text says the opposite, twice over.<\/p>\n\n<p>The mark that comes with worship is not something you can be tricked into, because worship is not something a person does by accident. And the seal that came first was not something you did at all. God did it. God is the one holding the stamp.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is why the order matters so much. If chapter 13 came first, the fear would make sense \u2014 you would be sitting there waiting to find out whether you got claimed. But chapter 7 came first. The claiming already happened.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p><strong>The mark you were afraid of is a copy. The original is God&#8217;s, and it came first.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>It is worth remembering that this same book, a few chapters earlier, has Jesus standing at a door and knocking \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/what-jesus-teaches\/ask-jesus-into-your-heart-bible-verse\/\">and He said it to people who were already Christians<\/a>. Revelation is not only a book about what you should be afraid of. It is mostly a book about who God keeps.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Actions to Take<\/h2>\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Read Revelation 7:1-4 out loud, right now.<\/strong> It takes under a minute. Read it <em>before<\/em> you read chapter 13 again. The order is the entire point, and hearing it in order does something that reading about it cannot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write down the one sentence you were actually afraid of.<\/strong> Not the topic \u2014 the sentence. Something like: &#8220;I could lose God without knowing it happened.&#8221; Then try to write the verse that says that next to it. There isn&#8217;t one. Looking at that blank space yourself is different from being told about it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Turn off whatever started this, for one week.<\/strong> One channel, one account, one thread. Not forever \u2014 one week, while you read the book for yourself. Fear about the end of the world is a product for some people. You are allowed to stop buying it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2>Journaling Prompts<\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n<li>When the fear arrives, what is it quietly telling you about how safe you believe you are with God? Write that belief down in plain words, even if you do not like how it sounds written down.<\/li>\n<li>Revelation says God does the sealing. Where in your life have you been acting as though holding on to God were a job you had to do alone, by being careful enough?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>A Prayer for When the Fear Comes Back<\/h2>\n\n<p><em>God, I have been afraid of something You already answered six chapters before the part that scared me. I do not always feel sealed and I do not always feel sure, and I would rather tell You that than pretend. Thank You that the holding on is Your work and not mine. Help me read the rest of my life in the right order too \u2014 Your claim on me first, and everything else after that.
