The tired of a decision you cannot make. Two doors in front of you. A job you could take or leave. A city you could move to, or stay away from. A person you could build a life with, or not. And underneath all of it, the same question running on a loop at two in the morning: <em>what is God&#8217;s will for my life, and why can I not hear it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>So you pray about it. You wait for a sign. You watch for a door to open, or slam. And when nothing comes, you start to wonder whether the silence is the answer \u2014 or worse, whether you already missed it years ago, and everything since has been a detour.<\/p>\n\n<p>I want to sit with you in that for a few minutes. Not with a better technique for hearing. With something stranger, and much more direct.<\/p>\n\n<p>Scripture answers that exact question. Out loud. In plain words. More than once.<\/p>\n\n<p>And not one of those answers is a job, a city, or a person.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Question Underneath the Question<\/h2>\n\n<p>When we ask what God&#8217;s will is for our lives, we nearly always mean one thing: <strong>which option am I supposed to pick?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Buried in that is an assumption almost nobody says out loud \u2014 that there is one correct path, that it has been hidden from us, and that our job is to find it. Find it, and life goes well. Miss it, and you spend the rest of your years in a slightly wrong life, a second-best version of the one you were meant to have.<\/p>\n\n<p>That assumption does real damage.<\/p>\n\n<p>It turns God into someone who hides. It turns prayer into a guessing game. And it quietly makes ordinary faithfulness feel like nothing, because the &#8220;real&#8221; question \u2014 the big one, the fork in the road \u2014 is still sitting there unanswered. It is a close cousin of another idea people assume is biblical and then cannot find, which is worth reading about on its own: <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/bible-resources\/bible-answers\/is-everything-happens-for-a-reason-in-the-bible\/\">whether &#8220;everything happens for a reason&#8221; is actually in the Bible<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>But go looking for the phrase itself in the New Testament, and something odd happens.<\/p>\n\n<p>The phrase is right there. It is not hidden at all. And every single time it shows up, it is followed immediately by an answer.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"bb8885f220\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/bb8885f220\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>Scripture Answers &#8220;What Is God&#8217;s Will for My Life&#8221; Outright<\/h2>\n\n<p>Three passages say it and then fill it in.<\/p>\n\n<p>The first is in a letter to a young church in Thessalonica:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For this is the will of God, even your sanctification&#8230;&#8221; \u2014 1 Thessalonians 4:3, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The second is in the same letter, one chapter later:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.&#8221; \u2014 1 Thessalonians 5:18, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The third is in Peter&#8217;s first letter. It is worth noticing the small difference in wording, because it is easy to quote it wrong \u2014 Peter does not write &#8220;this is,&#8221; he writes &#8220;so is&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men&#8230;&#8221; \u2014 1 Peter 2:15, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Same move all three times. The phrase appears, and then it is answered on the spot.<\/p>\n\n<p>Be set apart. Be grateful. Do good.<\/p>\n\n<p>Not one of them is a decision.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What Those Three Answers Actually Meant<\/h2>\n\n<p>&#8220;Sanctification&#8221; sounds like church vocabulary, and that is a shame, because the word underneath it is simple. It means <em>set apart<\/em>. Not lifted above ordinary life \u2014 marked out inside it.<\/p>\n\n<p>And here is the detail most people read straight past. Paul does not leave it abstract for even one sentence. He tells you immediately what he means by it, and it is startlingly physical and ordinary: how you handle your own body, and how you treat other people. A few lines on he adds &#8220;that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter&#8221; (1 Thessalonians 4:6, KJV).<\/p>\n\n<p>That is the territory. Not geography. Not career. Conduct.<\/p>\n\n<p>The second answer is placed in an even smaller frame. &#8220;In every thing give thanks.&#8221; Not for every thing \u2014 <em>in<\/em> every thing. Inside the situation you are actually in, including this one, including while it is unresolved.<\/p>\n\n<p>The third has a purpose attached to it that is easy to miss. Peter says doing good is what puts &#8220;to silence the ignorance of foolish men.&#8221; The point is not private virtue. It is that a life of quiet, unremarkable good is an argument nobody can shout down.<\/p>\n\n<h2>There Is a Fourth \u2014 and Jesus Said It<\/h2>\n\n<p>The brief version of this article stopped at three. It should not have, because Jesus uses the same construction about himself, and his answer is not a decision either:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life&#8230;&#8221; \u2014 John 6:40, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Again: not a plan to be located. A relationship to be entered.<\/p>\n\n<p>Four times the question is asked and answered plainly, and four times the answer is a way of living rather than a place to go.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The One Time Jesus Prayed About God&#8217;s Will, It Was Not Hidden<\/h2>\n\n<p>This is the part that rearranged the question for me.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the garden, hours before his arrest, Jesus prays:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.&#8221; \u2014 Luke 22:42, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Sit with the shape of that prayer for a second.<\/p>\n\n<p>Jesus is not asking what God&#8217;s will is. He already knows. That is the entire agony of the scene \u2014 the will of God was perfectly clear, and it was terrible, and he asked for it to be changed anyway, and then he accepted it.<\/p>\n\n<p>We tend to picture the difficulty of God&#8217;s will as an information problem. <em>If only I knew, I would do it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>The hardest night in the Gospels says the opposite. There, the difficulty was never information. It was surrender.<\/p>\n\n<p>Which is worth being honest about. Sometimes we are genuinely waiting on an answer. And sometimes we already have one, and we are quietly hoping a different one turns up. If the hearing itself is what feels broken, that is a real thing and worth its own look \u2014 there is a strange moment where <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/prayer\/how-to-hear-gods-voice-elijah-answered-twice\/\">Elijah asked to hear God, got a whisper, and then gave the exact same answer twice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Verse Everyone Quotes Is Read in the Wrong Order<\/h2>\n\n<p>Romans 12:2 is the verse people reach for on this subject:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.&#8221; \u2014 Romans 12:2, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Almost everybody quotes the back half of that sentence \u2014 proving the will of God \u2014 as though it were a method. A thing you do to get an answer.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is not the method. It is the result.<\/p>\n\n<p>The sentence only runs one direction: be transformed, <em>and then<\/em> you will be able to prove what God&#8217;s will is. Discernment sits downstream. It is what a changed mind can see, not a technique a stuck mind can perform.<\/p>\n\n<p>So if you cannot read your own situation clearly right now, the fix probably is not to concentrate harder on the decision. It is further upstream, in the part of the sentence everybody skips.<\/p>\n\n<h2>You Were Given the Answer. You Were Looking in the Wrong Category.<\/h2>\n\n<p>Put it all together and the shape becomes hard to miss.<\/p>\n\n<p>You have been asking a <em>where<\/em> question. Scripture keeps answering a <em>how<\/em> question.<\/p>\n\n<p>You asked which road. It said: be set apart on whichever road you are on. Be grateful on it. Do good on it. Believe on the One walking it with you.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is not a dodge, and it is not the easier answer. It is far more demanding than the one we wanted. A <em>where<\/em> question has one right answer and you can fail it once, permanently, and then carry that. A <em>how<\/em> question has an answer available every single day \u2014 including today, including inside the exact unresolved situation you are standing in right now. The work you already have. The room you already live in. The people already in the next room.<\/p>\n\n<p>And it means something you may need to hear more than any of the rest of it: <strong>you cannot have missed it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>There is no wrong turn taken at nineteen that put God&#8217;s will permanently out of reach. The thing that was named \u2014 set apart, grateful, doing good, believing \u2014 is not behind you. It is available in the next ten minutes, without a single thing about your future being settled first.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What This Looks Like Tomorrow Morning<\/h2>\n\n<p>Nothing here removes the decision. The decision may still be genuinely hard, and it may stay unresolved for a while.<\/p>\n\n<p>What changes is that the decision stops being the exam.<\/p>\n\n<p>You are no longer standing still at the fork, waiting to be told, unable to live until you are. You are already inside God&#8217;s will \u2014 the part that was actually named \u2014 while you wait. And more often than not, walking a little way down a road is what makes the road legible. Standing at the junction almost never does.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Actions to Take<\/h2>\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Say the three answers out loud, in your own words, about today.<\/strong> Not &#8220;God&#8217;s will for my life&#8221; \u2014 God&#8217;s will for this afternoon. Set apart in what? Grateful for what, in this exact mess? What good is actually within reach before you sleep? Two minutes, and the question stops being abstract.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do the one good thing you have been postponing because it felt too small to matter.<\/strong> The message you owe someone. The apology. The thing you said you would return. What makes it hard \u2014 not knowing, or not wanting?<\/li>\n<li>Where in your life right now could &#8220;in every thing give thanks&#8221; actually land \u2014 not as a performance, but honestly, inside something still unresolved?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>A Prayer<\/h2>\n\n<p>God, I have been standing at this fork for a long time, and I am tired. I think I have been asking You where when You already told me how. Help me stop treating my life as a test I might have already failed. None of the four is a job, a location, or a choice between options.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Can I miss God&#8217;s will for my life?<\/strong><br>\nThe passages that state God&#8217;s will directly describe a way of living rather than a single correct path \u2014 being set apart, being grateful, doing good, and believing. Because those are available on any given day and in any circumstance, they cannot be permanently missed by having made a wrong decision in the past. A person who believes they took a wrong turn years ago can begin living what scripture actually names as God&#8217;s will today.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Does the Bible say how to know which decision to make?<\/strong><br>\nNot in the way most people hope. Scripture does not promise a sign that identifies the correct job, city, or partner. Romans 12:2 is the closest thing to guidance on discernment, and it puts transformation first: &#8220;be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.&#8221; The ability to discern is described there as the outcome of a changed mind, not as a technique for producing an answer.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What does &#8220;sanctification&#8221; mean in 1 Thessalonians 4:3?<\/strong><br>\nIt means being set apart. In that passage Paul does not leave the word abstract \u2014 he immediately applies it to concrete conduct, including how a person handles their own body and how they treat others, adding in verse 6 &#8220;that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter.&#8221; The context makes God&#8217;s will a matter of daily behaviour rather than of destiny or location.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Why does God feel silent when I ask about a big decision?<\/strong><br>\nSilence in response to a decision-shaped question does not necessarily mean God is withholding an answer. It may mean the question is in a different category from the one scripture answers directly. It is also worth considering the possibility raised by Luke 22:42, where Jesus prays in the garden knowing exactly what God&#8217;s will is: there the difficulty was not a lack of information but the weight of accepting it.
