Sharper memory. Thicker, darker hair. Less inflammation in the brain.

It is a good headline. It is also doing a lot of work.

The research underneath it is real, published and peer reviewed. But almost everything you would want to know before changing your diet over it sits in the details below the headline — including the date, the species, and a caveat the researchers wrote into their own paper.

So here is what the study actually found, and what it did not.

What the Sea Squirt Anti-Aging Study Actually Did

Sea squirts are small marine animals that spend their adult lives fixed to rocks, filtering seawater. They are eaten in parts of East Asia, often raw. They are also unusually rich in plasmalogens — a kind of fat that sits in the membranes of your own cells, and is especially concentrated in the brain, the heart and the immune system. Plasmalogen levels tend to fall as a person gets older.

The study took female mice aged 16 to 18 months, which is old for a mouse, and gave them plasmalogens taken from sea squirts. The dose was 300 mg per kilogram of body weight, delivered directly into the stomach by tube, five days a week, for two months. Mice around three months old were used as a young comparison group.

Then the animals were tested in a Morris water maze — a standard memory task where an animal has to remember where a hidden platform is.

The treated older mice found the platform faster than untreated older mice. Their brain tissue showed more synapses, in better condition. Markers of brain inflammation fell, along with the activation of microglia, the brain’s own immune cells. And their fur grew back thicker, glossier and darker.

That last detail is a big part of why this story travels. It is visible. You can photograph it.

The Part Most Headlines Left Out: The Study Is From 2022

The paper is titled Plasmalogens Eliminate Aging-Associated Synaptic Defects and Microglia-Mediated Neuroinflammation in Mice. It was published in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences in 2022.

Not this month. Not this year. 2022.

What went out this week was a university press release, which news sites then carried the way they would carry a fresh finding. Nobody did anything obviously wrong. This is simply how the machinery works: a release goes out, an aggregator picks it up, another site rewrites the aggregator, and somewhere around the third retelling the study quietly becomes “scientists just discovered.”

The word “Stanford” in the headline is worth a second look too. The work was a collaboration between Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Stanford University. The corresponding author, Professor Lei Fu, is based at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool. Stanford is genuinely on the author list — but “Stanford scientists discover” compresses something considerably wider than that.

The Caveat the Researchers Put on It Themselves

This next part is worth reading twice, because it does not come from a critic. It comes from the paper.

The researchers noted that it is not clear how much of an oral plasmalogen supplement actually reaches brain cells, and that its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier may be limited.

Read that slowly. The people who ran the study are saying they are not certain the supplement gets to the place where the benefit was measured.

That does not make the results false. The mice improved, and the improvement was measured carefully. It means the mechanism is unresolved — the effect could be running through the gut rather than straight into the brain. Professor Fu has pointed to the gut-brain axis as one possible route.

An honest “we do not know yet” inside a paper is a good sign about the science, not a bad one. It just almost never survives the trip into a headline. The same thing happened with the research on the earliest signs of Alzheimer’s showing up seven years before plaques, where the finding that actually mattered was the opposite of what the summaries said.

Has Anyone Tested Plasmalogens in People?

Yes. And the human results are a good deal more modest.

One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial tested sea-squirt-derived plasmalogen in healthy adults over 12 weeks. Against placebo, the supplement group’s combined memory score rose by roughly 3 points at eight weeks and roughly 7 points at twelve. Worth noticing, though: the spread around those averages was far wider than the averages themselves, which means individual responses varied enormously. Some people in that group will have gone the other way.

A more recent trial, published this year, used plasmalogens from scallops in 66 adults over 40 whose verbal memory already scored below the average for their age. Over 12 weeks it reported a benefit for verbal memory — and its own authors wrote that the confidence interval was relatively wide and the p-value close to the conventional threshold for significance, so the finding should be read with caution and confirmed in larger studies.

So the honest summary is this: there is a real, years-long line of research here, with modest human signals that the investigators themselves are careful about. That is a very different sentence from “seafood reverses aging.” It is also the true one.

How to Read the Next Health Headline Like This One

None of this costs anything, and it takes about two minutes.

Find the date of the study, not the date of the article. A new press release about an old paper looks identical to a new discovery from the outside.

Check the species. Mice are not small people. Plenty of things that work beautifully in a mouse have gone nowhere in humans.

Find the dose and how it was given. 300 mg per kilogram, by stomach tube, five days a week for two months is not the same thing as eating some seafood on a Thursday.

Look for what the researchers said they do not know. It is usually in the discussion section, and it is usually the most useful paragraph in the whole paper.

Notice who has something to sell. Plasmalogen supplements are already on the market, and a fair amount of the coverage of this research is written for that trade.

It is the same set of questions worth asking about any striking health claim — the ones we worked through with the shingles vaccine and dementia study apply almost word for word here.

Why a Four-Year-Old Mouse Study Travels This Far

Here is the part that is genuinely interesting, and it is not in the paper.

A study from 2022, in mice, with a mechanism its own authors call unresolved, went around the world again in September 2026. Not because anything changed. Because we wanted it to be true.

And that wanting is old. Much older than journals, or supplements, or press releases. The oldest story in the Bible ends with people shut out of a garden, and the specific thing they are shut out from is a tree that would have let them live forever. It usually gets read as a punishment. Read slowly, it is stranger than that: what God withholds is not life, but endless time in a broken state — which is a rather different and kinder thing to be spared. There is a line in the same collection that says something has been set inside the human heart that makes a person reach past their own lifespan, so that no one can ever be quite content inside it.

Which may be the best available explanation for why a mouse’s glossy fur can make the news twice.

Where That Leaves You

Sea squirts are not a scam. Plasmalogens are a real class of molecules doing real work in your body, and the research is worth following. If you like the taste, eat them. Nothing here says otherwise.

But the thing the research cannot reach is the question sitting underneath the search. Most people typing “anti-aging” into a search bar at night are not asking for more years in the abstract. They are asking for more time with a particular person. Or more time to fix something they left too long. Or simply not to be slowly forgotten by their own memory.

Those are different problems, and some of them can be started on today, with no supplement and no money. A phone call is free. So is an apology.

And if you are curious how much time you have actually had so far, our free How Many Days Have I Been Alive? calculator does the arithmetic for you. It is a strange, quietly clarifying number to see written down — less a countdown than a receipt.

Questions People Are Asking

Do sea squirts really reverse aging?
Not in humans, on the current evidence. A 2022 study published in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences found that plasmalogens extracted from sea squirts improved memory performance, increased healthy synapses, reduced brain inflammation and produced thicker, darker fur in mice aged 16 to 18 months. Those results were measured in mice only, at a dose of 300 mg per kilogram delivered by stomach tube five days a week for two months. Human trials of plasmalogen supplements have reported smaller effects on memory, with caveats noted by the researchers themselves.

What are plasmalogens?
Plasmalogens are a subclass of phospholipids — fats that form part of the membrane around cells. They occur naturally throughout the human body and are especially concentrated in the brain, the heart and immune cells. Levels tend to decline with age, and reduced plasmalogen levels have been associated with neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer’s disease. Sea squirts and scallops are both dietary sources.

When was the sea squirt anti-aging study published?
The mouse study behind the 2026 wave of coverage was published in 2022, in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences, under the title “Plasmalogens Eliminate Aging-Associated Synaptic Defects and Microglia-Mediated Neuroinflammation in Mice.” The news coverage in September 2026 followed a university press release about that earlier paper, not a new result.

Have plasmalogens been tested in humans?
Yes. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of sea-squirt-derived plasmalogen in healthy adults reported a modest improvement in a combined memory score over 12 weeks, with wide variation between individuals. A 2026 trial of scallop-derived plasmalogens in 66 adults over 40 with below-average verbal memory reported a benefit over 12 weeks, while its authors cautioned that the confidence interval was relatively wide and the p-value close to the threshold for significance, and called for larger studies.

Does eating sea squirts give you the dose used in the study?
The study did not test ordinary eating. It used a concentrated plasmalogen extract given at 300 mg per kilogram of body weight by intragastric tube, five days a week for two months, in mice. No conclusion about the effect of eating sea squirts as food can be drawn from that design.

Your Turn

Which does more damage in the end — a headline that overstates what a study found, or a genuinely useful study that never gets reported at all? There is a real argument on both sides. Tell us which way you land in the comments.

That “seafood reverses aging” story going round?
