The tour sold out across continents. And now there is a film about it.

Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger has its world premiere, out of competition, at the Venice Film Festival on 5 September 2026. It reaches cinemas within days and arrives on Disney+ later this year. Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern directed it, Steven Knight wrote it, and it follows the band’s 2025 reunion tour from the rehearsal room to the stage.

But the rehearsal footage is not what people are waiting for. What people are waiting for is a conversation — the first time Liam and Noel Gallagher have sat down together for an interview in more than fifteen years.

As this is published, the film has not screened publicly. Nobody outside the production knows what is in that room. So it is worth being careful about what we actually know, because the moment most of us are hoping to see is probably not the moment that ended it.

What the Oasis reunion documentary can and cannot tell us

Here is what is on the public record, and it is less than the headlines suggest.

The brothers were estranged for well over a decade. They announced a reunion. They rehearsed. They played a tour together through 2025 with a camera crew present. And somewhere inside all of that, they sat down and talked on film for the first time in fifteen years.

What we do not know — and nobody outside that room does — is whether an apology was ever spoken. Whether anyone said sorry. Whether the old arguments were settled or simply set down. None of that has been reported, and guessing at it would be exactly the kind of story people invent about other families.

But look at the sequence, because the sequence is public even when the feelings are not.

The tour came first. The rehearsals came first. Standing on a stage together, night after night, in front of a stadium — that came first. The sitting down and talking about it came last.

That order is the whole story, and almost nobody is talking about it.

Most people are waiting for a conversation that never comes

If there is someone you no longer speak to — a brother, a sister, a parent, a grown child — you probably have a scene in your head.

You know the one. They finally understand. They say the thing they have never said. They say it properly, and they mean it. And then, and only then, it can be over.

That scene is doing more damage than the original argument did.

Because it puts the ending of your estrangement inside someone else’s mouth. Nothing can move until a specific person says a specific sentence in a specific tone. You could wait your entire life for that. A great many people do.

The order of events in the Oasis story points somewhere else entirely. Reconciliation is not usually a conversation you have. It is a thing you quietly start doing, and the conversation catches up later — or it never does, and you turn out to be reconciled anyway.

What actually restarts a relationship

Not a speech. Almost never a speech. What restarts things is nearly always something small, ordinary and shared — something that puts two people in the same space with something to do that is not the argument.

A practical version of that, which costs nothing and needs no one’s permission:

Lower the bar until it feels almost silly. Not a talk. Not a coffee where the talk will happen. A message about something that has nothing to do with either of you — a song, an old photograph, a thing you both remember. Contact with no agenda attached is the entire goal.

Give up the apology as a requirement. Wanting one is completely fair. Requiring one hands another person a switch they may never flip. You can hold both things at once: this hurt me, and I am not waiting for permission to move.

Do something alongside them, not opposite them. Side by side is far easier than face to face. A task, a walk, a meal being cooked. Two chairs facing each other is an interrogation. Two chairs facing the same direction is a relationship.

Expect it to be awkward, and go anyway. Warmth on the first attempt is rare. Awkward is not failure — awkward is the sound of something starting.

Be honest about what you actually want. Full closeness and simple peace are different goals, and only one of them requires the other person to change.

That last one is where most people get stuck, because it is genuinely hard to tell the difference between being ready and being tired. Our free Am I Ready to Forgive? assessment walks you through it in a few minutes, and it is worth doing before you send anything. If the person you are thinking of is a sibling specifically, what Joseph waited decades to say to his brothers is the closest thing to a map anyone has written.

The oldest version of this story

Long before anyone filmed a reunion, there was a story about two brothers who did not speak for twenty years.

One had cheated the other out of everything that mattered — an inheritance, a blessing, a dying father’s last words. Then he ran, and stayed gone for two decades.

When he finally came home, he did what frightened people do: he over-prepared. He sent enormous gifts ahead of himself in staggered waves, so that his brother would meet a river of goodwill long before he met the man. He arranged his own family in order of who he could most afford to lose. He rehearsed what he would say. Then he walked toward his brother bowing to the ground, seven times over.

He got about halfway through the bowing.

His brother ran at him — the brother with every right to stay angry — threw his arms around his neck, and they both wept. The speech never got finished. Nobody needed it.

And then two details almost everyone reads straight past.

The gift was refused. All of it. The wronged brother said he already had enough and told him to keep it. The elaborate peace offering, a whole chapter in the making, turned out to be unwanted.

And afterwards, they did not go home together. One went back to his own country. The other settled somewhere else entirely. The story does not explain the split or apologise for it. It simply records that the two of them went different ways, and that none of it undid the embrace.

Twenty years of silence ended before the apology, without the gift, and without the brothers merging their lives back into one. Whoever preserved that account could easily have tidied it into something neater. They left it exactly as it happened — which, if you have ever assumed God has nothing much to say about ordinary family wreckage, is a strangely honest thing to have left in. The same detail shows up again in the most famous homecoming story of all: the one who had been wronged moves first, and moves before the speech is over.

Reconciled is not the same as reunited

That is the piece worth carrying out of both stories — the ancient one and the one premiering this week.

Two brothers on a stage in front of a roaring stadium are not necessarily two brothers who are close. A sold-out tour is not proof that everything is fine. It is proof of something smaller and far more useful: people who have not spoken in fifteen years can stand next to each other and do something together anyway.

You may never get the conversation. You may get something less cinematic and more durable instead — a message answered, a birthday remembered, a room that both of you can be in at the same time. That is not the consolation prize. In the oldest version of this story, that was the entire reconciliation, and it was enough.

The film opens this week. Whatever turns out to be in that interview, the reunion happened before the talking did.

It usually does.

A Question Worth Sitting With

Do you think a relationship can genuinely be repaired without an apology ever being spoken out loud — or does something stay broken until someone actually says it? There are strong opinions on both sides of this and no real consensus. Tell us where you land in the comments.

“The Oasis reunion tour happened before the brothers ever sat down and talked about it. It reaches cinemas in September 2026, including selected IMAX screens, and streams later in 2026 on Disney+ internationally and on Disney+ and Hulu in the United States.

Who made the Oasis reunion documentary?
“Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger” was directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern and written by Steven Knight. It follows the band’s 2025 reunion tour, including rehearsal, backstage and performance footage.

Do Liam and Noel Gallagher appear together in the documentary?
Yes. The film contains the first joint interview Liam and Noel Gallagher have given after more than fifteen years of estrangement, alongside footage from the 2025 reunion tour.

Did Liam and Noel Gallagher apologise to each other?
This has not been publicly confirmed. Nothing on the public record states whether an apology was exchanged between them, and the film had not screened publicly at the time of writing. What is documented is the order of events: the brothers announced, rehearsed and performed a full reunion tour together before the filmed conversation between them took place.

Can you reconcile with an estranged family member without an apology?
Yes. Many reconciliations begin without one, because requiring an apology makes the repair depend entirely on another person’s choice. Contact tends to restart through small, low-pressure, shared activity rather than through a confrontation about the past. It also helps to separate two different goals: full closeness, which needs both people to change, and simple peace, which does not.

What is the difference between being reconciled and being reunited?
Being reconciled means the hostility has ended and contact is possible again. Being reunited means the relationship returns to its former closeness or the two people share their lives again. The two often do not happen together, and a reconciliation that never becomes a reunion is still a genuine reconciliation.
