How to Get Through Today

                  Read Time:9 Minute, 46 Second

You are sitting on the edge of the bed with your feet already on the floor. Nothing bad has happened yet today, and you are already tired. When everything feels like too much before the day has even started, it is hard to say out loud without sounding dramatic.

Somewhere in the last minute your head has run the whole thing: the message you have to answer, the money that has to stretch, the person you are avoiding, the appointment, the thing you said last week that you keep re-hearing. None of it is happening. All of it is happening at once, in your chest.

And the strangest part is how ordinary it looks from outside. Nobody would call your life a crisis. That is exactly why it is so hard to explain to anyone, and why you usually just stand up and carry it anyway.

Why Everything Feels Like Too Much Even on a Quiet Day

The usual advice says you have too much on your plate. Cut something. Delegate. Learn to say no.

That advice assumes you have something you are allowed to put down. Most people reading this do not. The job is the job. The children still need feeding. The rent is not optional. Being told to reduce a load that cannot be reduced mostly just adds a fresh failure to the pile.

So try a different question. Not how much am I carrying, but when is it due.

Take the weight sitting on you right now and sort it by day. Write it out if you can. What you will almost always find is that today — the actual hours between now and sleep — asks something small and boring of you. Four things. Maybe six. Get somewhere. Do the work. Feed people. Answer two messages.

The rest of it, the part that is actually crushing you, belongs to other days. The bill due in three weeks. The conversation on Friday. The result you are waiting on. The version of your life five years out that you cannot see the shape of yet.

You are not carrying today. You are carrying today, plus a fortnight, plus a decade, all at once, in a body that has one day’s worth of strength in it.

Here is how you can tell. You are tired before you have done anything. That is not possible if the tiredness came from doing. It came from carrying.

It also explains why the advice you already tried did nothing. One thing at a time is about doing, and doing was never the problem — you can only ever do one thing at a time anyway. It is the carrying that has no limit, which is the same reason telling yourself to stop overthinking never works. You are aiming at the wrong part of it.

The Load Is Not the Problem. The Timing Is.

Think about what strength actually is for a moment. Not as an idea — as a supply.

You wake up with a certain amount of it. Not unlimited, and not the same every day: less if you slept badly, less if you are unwell, less if you are grieving. By night it is mostly gone. And then, remarkably, tomorrow morning there is more.

Here is the part that changes things. That supply does not transfer. You cannot reach forward and borrow tomorrow’s strength to help you carry tomorrow’s trouble today. Tomorrow’s strength does not exist yet. There is only today’s, and today’s is the only thing you are able to spend.

So when you pick up Friday’s conversation on a Tuesday morning, you are not getting ahead of it. You are paying for Friday out of Tuesday’s account. Friday still costs the same when it arrives. You have simply arrived at it with less.

Worry is the only kind of preparation that leaves you less prepared than when you started.

That idea is older than it sounds. There is a line in Matthew’s gospel that everybody half-quotes and almost nobody finishes: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” The English there is four hundred years old, and in that English “take no thought” meant something closer to do not be anxious — it was never an argument against planning. But look at what the last line refuses to say. It does not say tomorrow will be fine. It says today already comes with a full measure of its own trouble. Not a light load. A portioned one.

This is a stranger and kinder idea than “don’t worry, it will all work out.” It does not pretend the difficulty away. It says the difficulty comes one day at a time, and so does what you need to meet it, and the two are meant to arrive together.

What to Do When Everything Feels Like Too Much Today

None of this needs money, a therapist, a free weekend, or belief in anything. It needs a scrap of paper and about ten minutes, and you can start the first one before you stand up.

Sort the weight by date, not by size. Write down everything pressing on you, all of it, in whatever order it falls out. Then go back through and put a day beside each one — the day it actually has to be dealt with, not the day you started worrying about it. Circle only the ones dated today. That circled list is your real load. Everything else is real too, but it is not yours yet.

Give the uncircled things a home. A worry with nowhere to go will keep coming back to check you have not forgotten it, and that is most of the noise in your head. So do not try to solve it. Just house it. Write “Thursday morning” next to it, or say it out loud if writing is not possible: that one is Thursday’s. You are not dismissing anything. You are telling yourself where it lives, which is the only thing that makes it stop knocking.

Ask each worry what it wants done today. Take one of the uncircled ones and put the question to it directly: is there a move available right now? Sometimes there is — send the message, check the number, ask the question — and if so, do the two-minute version of it immediately, because half of what feels enormous is only something unstarted. Far more often the honest answer is that there is nothing to be done about it today. Notice that. A worry with no move today is not a task. It is a rehearsal. If you are not sure which of yours are rehearsals, this free anxiety self-assessment walks you through it in a couple of minutes.

Put your hands on something that ends. Wash what is in the sink. Sweep a floor. Walk to the end of the road and back. This is not a distraction technique and it is not really about the dishes. It is that your body has spent all morning on things with no visible finish, and it needs proof that finishing is still something that happens. Ten minutes of work with an edge on it does more for the feeling than an hour of trying to think your way calm.

Tonight, Check the Score

Before you sleep, make one honest comparison. What did today actually ask of you, and what did you carry?

Not to feel bad about the gap. Just to see it. Most people find that the day they survived was far smaller than the day they braced for, and that the bracing cost more than the surviving did. You need to see that in your own life, in your own handwriting, because you will not believe it from an article. It is also the quiet reason so many people cannot fall asleep even when they are exhausted — the body has stopped, and the carrying has not.

Do it a few nights running and something shifts. You stop trusting the forecast in your head quite so much. Not because you have become calm — you probably will not become calm — but because you have started to notice that it is wrong in the same direction every time.

You do not have to carry the whole thing. You were never actually able to. So what is today asking of you — just today, just the hours you can see?

I would like to know what your version of this looks like. When your head starts loading up the whole week at once, what is the thing it always reaches for first?

Questions People Ask About Feeling Like Everything Is Too Much

Why does everything feel like too much when nothing is really wrong?

Feeling overwhelmed on an ordinary day usually means the weight being carried does not belong to that day alone. Sorting every pressing worry by the date it actually has to be dealt with tends to reveal that today asks for a small, finite list, while most of the load is dated next week, next month, or years away. Carrying several days at once on one day’s energy produces exhaustion that arrives before anything has been done, which is the clearest sign the tiredness came from carrying rather than from doing.

What is the difference between planning and worrying?

Planning produces a decision or an action and then stops. Worrying produces another loop. A reliable test is to ask a worry what move it wants made today. If it names one, it is planning, and the smallest version of that move can usually be done straight away. If it cannot name any action available today, it is a rehearsal rather than a task, and running it a fifth time will not make the future arrive better prepared.

How do I stop worrying about things I cannot control?

Worries that cannot be acted on today respond better to being given a place than to being given an answer. Writing down the day a concern actually belongs to, such as “Thursday morning,” stops the mind raising it repeatedly, because most repeat worrying is the mind checking that something has not been forgotten. Pairing that with physical work that has a visible ending, like washing dishes or walking a short distance, gives the body evidence that tasks can finish, which lowers the feeling faster than trying to reason the worry away.

How do I get through a day when I cannot reduce my workload?

Cutting the workload is not an option for many people, and the more useful move is to reduce how much is being carried at once rather than how much has to be done. Listing every current pressure and marking beside each one the day it genuinely has to be handled usually shows that the present day requires a short, finite set of tasks, while the heavier part of the load is dated further out. Working only from the items dated today, and writing a specific future day beside everything else, leaves the workload identical but cuts the weight being held at any single moment.

Share This With Someone Who Is Carrying Too Much

“I’m not tired from what I did today. I’m tired because I’ve been carrying next month around in my chest since breakfast.”

“Worry is the only kind of preparation that leaves you less ready than when you started. Needed to read that this morning.”

“Sorted everything worrying me by the date it’s actually due. Today’s list had four things on it. I’d been carrying about forty.”

                <div
