Somebody hands it to you at the door on the way out. A paperback, still crisp, with a title about walking or growing or becoming. They say “this one changed my life,” and they mean it, and you say thank you, and it rides home on the passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n

By Thursday it has moved to the back seat. You are not ungrateful. You opened it, read a page and a half, and could not work out whether you were supposed to be studying it, reading it, or doing something with it afterward.<\/p>\n\n

Here is the part nobody mentions when they hand you a book. The first books ever written for brand-new Christians were not handed to anybody. They were read out loud, front to back, in one sitting, to a room full of people. That one fact quietly answers the question you are actually asking — which is not which book<\/em>, but what is a book even supposed to do for me right now?<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Show Me Day 1<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The first book for a new Christian was a letter<\/h2>\n\n

The letters in the back half of the Bible were not written for scholars. They went to congregations that were, in some cases, only months old — people who had said yes to Jesus and then immediately started arguing about food, money, and who was in charge. Brand-new believers, in other words, with brand-new problems.<\/p>\n\n

And the letters say out loud what was supposed to happen to them. Paul ends the letter to Colossae with a delivery instruction:<\/p>\n\n

“And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.” — Colossians 4:16, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Read among you. Then swapped with the next town, so both rooms hear both letters. To the Thessalonians he is even more direct, and the word he chooses is unusually heavy for a note about logistics:<\/p>\n\n

“I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:27, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Revelation opens with a blessing that splits its audience into two groups, and the grammar gives the whole thing away:<\/p>\n\n

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” — Revelation 1:3, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

One person reading. Everybody else listening. That is a room, not a chair.<\/p>\n\n

So the original format for a new Christian had three features, none of which show up on a modern beginner shelf. It was short enough to finish in one sitting<\/strong>. It was heard, not studied<\/strong>. And it was shared, not done alone<\/strong>. Nobody was assigned chapters. Nobody fell behind.<\/p>\n\n

Three questions to ask before you pick one<\/h2>\n\n

Once you know what the first ones were like, choosing gets much simpler. Three questions, in this order.<\/p>\n\n

1. Can I finish it this month?<\/strong> Length is not a measure of value, but an unfinished book teaches you something untrue about yourself — that you are the kind of person who does not follow through on God things. That is a lie, and it is an expensive one to learn from a paperback. As a rule of thumb rather than a rule: if you cannot see the end from where you are standing, it is a second book, not a first one.<\/p>\n\n

2. Can I hear it?<\/strong> The first Christians received all of this by ear, and there is nothing lesser about that. Check whether the book you are considering has an audio version before you buy the paper one. There will be mornings your eyes will not focus and your ears will work fine, and a book you can listen to while the kettle boils survives those mornings. A book that requires a lamp and forty quiet minutes does not.<\/p>\n\n

3. Is it about a Person, or about a position?<\/strong> This is the one that sorts the shelf. Most books written for new Christians are arguments — is this true, how should I now behave, what does this denomination hold. Those are good questions and they are not your question. Your question, the one that actually keeps you up, is what is He like?<\/em> Books that answer it tell you what Jesus did and said. Books that dodge it tell you what to think about what He did and said.<\/p>\n\n

If you are buying one for somebody else<\/h2>\n\n

Half the people searching for a book for a new Christian are not new Christians. They are the friend, the aunt, the person who was there the night it happened and wants to mark it with something.<\/p>\n\n

If that is you, know what you are actually handing over. A book is a kindness and also a small obligation — every time they see the spine, they are reminded of a thing they have not finished. So do two things that cost nothing. Write inside the front cover which chapter to read first, by number. And write, in your own handwriting, that they do not have to finish it. Those two sentences turn a monument into a starting point.<\/p>\n\n

Then buy for the tired version of them, not the ideal one. Ask what time of day they have ten free minutes, and pick something that fits inside those ten minutes. The book already sitting in the house<\/h2>\n\n

Here is the awkward part of every beginner book list, including ours. Almost every new Christian already owns the one book that belongs at the top of it, and it is usually within twenty feet of where they are reading this.<\/p>\n\n

The Bible is not a hard book because the words are hard. It is hard because nobody tells you where the door is, and the front cover is the worst possible place to start. But there is one thing a book — any book, including that one — cannot do for you. It cannot tell you which page to open tomorrow. It cannot notice that yesterday was hard and hand you the chapter that meets it. That gap between owning the material and knowing what to do with it on a Tuesday is where most first months go quiet, and it is not a reading problem.
