You are holding your phone a little too close to your face, and you have just typed the same thing thousands of other people type every month: how do I break a soul tie.

Something happened. Maybe last year. Maybe fifteen years ago. And it has not let go of you.

Nobody has to explain a soul tie to you. You already feel it. There is a person whose voice you still hear correcting you when you make a decision. A part of you that seems to have walked off wearing someone else’s coat.

So here is the thing that sounds harsh for about ten seconds, and then starts to feel like fresh air.

The phrase “soul tie” is not in the Bible

Not in the King James. Not in any major English translation. You can read from Genesis to Revelation and those two words never appear beside each other. Not once.

That is not a scolding. If you learned this language in church, or from a pastor you trust, or from a video that finally put a name to something you had been feeling for years, you were not being foolish. You were reaching for a word to describe something real, and somebody handed you one.

But the word arrived with a machine attached. Signs you have one. Steps to break it. Prayers said in the right order. And if the heaviness does not lift, the machine has an answer ready for that too: you must not have done it properly.

That last part is where the harm lives. So let us go and look at what the verses actually say. Both of them.

The verse it all rests on is about two friends and a promise

Almost every teaching on this eventually lands on one sentence, in 1 Samuel 18:1:

“And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

There is the word. Knit. Souls, joined.

Now read what is happening around it. David has just come back from the valley where he faced Goliath. He is standing in front of King Saul, a young man nobody had heard of a week ago. Jonathan is standing there watching — and Jonathan is the king’s son. The heir. The next king, by every rule anybody in that room understood.

And Jonathan looks at this shepherd and decides to love him.

Two verses later, this is what that love does:

“Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.” (1 Samuel 18:3)

Then he takes off his robe, and hands David his garments, his sword, his bow and his belt. Those are not gifts. Those are the things that mark him out as the son of the king. Jonathan is handing the throne’s insignia to the man who is going to take the throne instead of him, and doing it gladly.

That is what the “knit soul” verse is describing. Loyalty. Covenant. One friend choosing another friend over his own future.

There is no sex in the passage. There is no ceremony, no curse, no invisible cord. And there is nothing anywhere in the story suggesting the bond was a problem that needed undoing — it is held up as one of the most beautiful friendships in all of scripture.

The same words describe an old man and his youngest son

Here is the part that almost never gets mentioned, and it is the part that quietly settles the whole question.

The Hebrew behind “the soul of Jonathan was knit” is two words: qashar, to tie or bind, and nephesh, soul or life.

That exact pairing shows up again in Genesis 44:30. Judah is standing in Egypt, pleading with a powerful stranger not to keep his youngest brother Benjamin. He is trying to explain what it would do to their elderly father:

“Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;” (Genesis 44:30)

“Bound up” is qashar. “Life,” both times, is nephesh. Word for word, it is the same construction as 1 Samuel 18:1. Read literally, Jacob’s soul is tied to Benjamin’s soul.

So Jacob has a soul tie with his own son.

Nobody has ever held a service to break that one. Nobody has ever written a checklist of warning signs that an elderly father loves his youngest child too much. Because everyone can see immediately what the phrase is doing there — it is ordinary Hebrew for a love that goes all the way down. English does the same thing when we say a parent is completely wrapped up in their kids. Nobody hears that and reaches for scissors.

Same words. Same grammar. And the moment you put the two verses side by side, the machinery falls off.

The other verse — and the word Paul actually used

To be fair, 1 Samuel is not the only place people go. When the worry is about a past sexual relationship, the verse is usually 1 Corinthians 6:16:

“What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.”

And Paul absolutely is saying that something real happens. He is not shrugging. He is arguing hard that sex is not a small thing you can do with your body and leave behind you in the room.

But look closely at the words he chose. One body. One flesh.

Not one soul. Not one spirit. Paul, who uses all of those words freely and precisely everywhere else, does not use them here.

Let us be careful about what is being claimed. This is not “sex doesn’t bond people” — scripture plainly says it does, and so does your own experience, which is probably why you are reading this at all. The narrower claim is the one worth checking: that scripture describes an attachment at the level of the soul, which then requires a specific ritual to sever. That mechanism is not in the text. It has been built on top of the text.

What Paul says in the very next sentence

Read one line further. One. This is 1 Corinthians 6:17, sitting right there:

“But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.”

You came here looking for a way to cut something.

Paul answers by offering a different joining.

There is no undoing anywhere in the passage. No severing, no reversal, no breaking. The remedy Paul reaches for is not subtraction — it is a deeper attachment to God, strong enough that it reorders everything else you are attached to.

And there is one more thing sitting in plain sight that took me by surprise.

The man in the “knit soul” verse — David — is the same man who later took another man’s wife. Of everybody in scripture, if anyone had grounds to go looking for a tie to break, it was him.

Read what he actually asked for:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

Not break this. Not cut me loose. Make me clean, and put something right back inside me. He asked for a new inside, not an amputation. (We looked at that whole prayer, line by line, in what the Bible says about regret, and it is the closest thing scripture has to a manual for the morning after your worst decision.)

So what are you actually carrying?

Because you are carrying something. That was never in question. Naming it wrongly is the only thing that was.

Most of the time it is one of four things, and every one of them is ordinary, human, and answerable.

Grief. You lost a person. It does not matter whether losing them was right, or your fault, or a relief. Loss still costs what loss costs. Grief does not respond to prayers of severance because grief is not a spirit. It is love with nowhere to go, and it only answers to time and honesty.

Memory. Your body keeps a record. A song, a smell, a certain slant of light in the late afternoon. That is not an attachment reaching for you from a distance. That is your own memory doing exactly the job God built it to do.

Shame. This is the heavy one, and it is usually the real reason people start searching at two in the morning. Shame whispers that you are permanently marked — and a soul tie is a very good story for explaining that feeling, because it makes the mark sound like a mechanism instead of a lie. It is worth learning to tell the two apart; there is a real difference between guilt that is doing its job and shame that never resolves.

Habit. A pattern you learned inside that relationship, still running. How you brace before you speak. What you assume people want from you.

Notice what all four have in common: not one of them requires you to perform a ritual correctly or it does not count. That matters more than it looks. The cruelest thing about the whole framework is that it can fail you — you can say the words, feel nothing change, and conclude that you are the problem. God does not hide freedom behind a procedure you might get wrong.

Actions to Take Today

Name it in one sentence, out loud. Not “I have a soul tie.” Say the real word. “I am still grieving him.” “I am ashamed of what I did.” “I never got to say goodbye.” Say it once to the empty room. Precision is the beginning of freedom, and vague heaviness is the thing that has been keeping you awake.

Pray Psalm 51:10 in your own words, out loud. Sixty seconds. Ask God for a clean heart and a right spirit, and then stop talking. You are asking for something to be made new, not for something to be cut off.

Remove one trigger. Just one. Delete one saved conversation, or move one photo into a folder you do not open. Not all of them, and not tonight in a burst. One. You are not performing a ceremony; you are lowering the number of times a day your mind gets ambushed.

Journaling Prompts

What would actually have to change for you to feel free of this — and is it something you want God to remove, or something you want God to heal? Write both answers, even if only one is comfortable.

When you first heard the words “soul tie,” what did the phrase give you that you did not have before? Sometimes a wrong name is still the first time someone took your pain seriously.

If the heaviness is grief rather than bondage, what have you never let yourself mourn out loud?

A Prayer You Can Pray Right Now

God, I have been trying to cut something out of me, and I am so tired. I do not fully understand what I am carrying — whether it is grief, or shame, or just a memory that will not sit down. But God knows, and I am handing it over rather than diagnosing it. Create in me a clean heart. Join me to God so completely that everything else finds its right place. Amen.

A Question Worth Talking About

Why do you think teaching built on a phrase that is not in scripture spreads so quickly and holds on so tightly — is it the language filling a genuine gap the church left empty, or something else? Share your thinking in the comments; a lot of people reading this were handed the same idea and have never once been invited to question it.

The phrase “soul tie” is not in the Bible. The verse it all rests on is about two friends and a promise, and the exact same Hebrew describes an old father and his youngest son. You are not bound. You are grieving. Those need different medicine.

I spent years trying to break something scripture never says exists. Turns out the answer in 1 Corinthians 6 is not a severing — it is a deeper joining. Read one verse further than everyone stops.

David could have asked God to break a tie. He asked for a clean heart instead. Psalm 51:10.

Common Questions About Soul Ties

Is the phrase “soul tie” in the Bible?
No. The words “soul tie” do not appear together in the King James Version or in any major English translation of the Bible. The concept is built by combining the language of 1 Samuel 18:1, where “the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David,” with 1 Corinthians 6:16, where Paul says that a man joined to a harlot becomes “one body” with her. Neither verse uses the phrase, and neither describes a bond that must be ritually severed.

What does 1 Samuel 18:1 actually mean?
1 Samuel 18:1 describes the beginning of the friendship between Jonathan, the son of King Saul, and David, shortly after David faced Goliath. The verse reads, “the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” Two verses later the two men make a covenant, and Jonathan gives David his robe, sword, bow and belt — the marks of his own position as heir to the throne. The passage is describing loyal covenant friendship, and scripture presents it as admirable rather than as a bond needing to be broken.

Is the Hebrew word for “knit” used anywhere else in the Bible?
Yes. The Hebrew verb is qashar (to tie or bind) and the noun is nephesh (soul or life). The same pairing appears in Genesis 44:30, where Judah says of his father Jacob and his younger brother Benjamin that “his life is bound up in the lad’s life.” That verse uses the identical construction to describe an elderly father’s love for his son — which shows the phrase is a Hebrew figure of speech for deep love, not a description of a spiritual mechanism.

Does 1 Corinthians 6:16 teach that sex creates a soul tie?
1 Corinthians 6:16 says that a person joined to a harlot becomes “one body” with her, and quotes Genesis: “two, saith he, shall be one flesh.” Paul is clearly teaching that sexual union is significant rather than trivial. However, the words he uses are body and flesh, not soul or spirit. The passage does not describe a soul-level bond, and it prescribes no ritual for undoing one. In the very next verse, 1 Corinthians 6:17, Paul writes, “But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit” — offering a deeper attachment to God rather than a severing.

If soul ties are not biblical, why do I still feel attached to someone?
Feeling attached to a past relationship is a normal human experience with several ordinary causes: unresolved grief over the loss of the person, physical memory triggered by songs, places or smells, shame about what happened, and habits of thought learned inside that relationship. None of these require a ritual to remove. Scripture’s own model, seen in David’s prayer in Psalm 51:10 — “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” — is a request for cleansing and renewal, not for severing.

If any of this landed, and what you actually want is not to cut something off but to feel close to God again, our free <a
