The picture freezes, then catches up. Then your child leans in \u2014 and they are taller.<\/p>\n<p>You knew that. You have seen every photo. But knowing it and watching it are two different things, and the gap opens right there, in the middle of a call you only have twenty minutes for.<\/p>\n<p>This is the part nobody warned you about. They warned you about the agency fees, the paperwork, the shift patterns. Nobody said that working abroad away from family would split one simple word \u2014 <em>provide<\/em> \u2014 clean in half.<\/p>\n<h2>Working Abroad Away From Family Splits Provision From Presence<\/h2>\n<p>You left so they would eat. So the roof would hold. So the school fees would be paid, and the medicine would be there when someone needed it.<\/p>\n<p>That was love. It is still love. Every transfer you send is love with a receipt attached.<\/p>\n<p>But love is supposed to be something you do <em>near<\/em> a person. You are doing it from three time zones away, and something in you knows the difference even when the money arrives on time.<\/p>\n<p>So you carry a quiet ache that is hard to explain to anyone back home \u2014 because from there, you look like the lucky one. And hard to explain to anyone here, because everyone here left somebody too, and nobody wants to be the first one to say it out loud.<\/p>\n<p>That ache is not weakness, and it is not ingratitude. It is what love does when you stretch it across a distance. It aches because it is still attached. Scripture actually has a more precise word for this than &#8220;lonely&#8221; \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/video\/what-the-bible-says-about-loneliness\/\">the Hebrew word it reaches for means solitary, and it is also the word used for an only child<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>The Bible&#8217;s Most Famous Promise Was Written to People Far From Home<\/h2>\n<p>You have almost certainly met this verse before. It turns up on graduation cards, phone wallpapers, and painted on kitchen walls:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.&#8221; \u2014 Jeremiah 29:11, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What almost nobody mentions is where that sentence came from.<\/p>\n<p>It is line eleven of a letter.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah 29 says so in its own first line: &#8220;Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives&#8221; (Jeremiah 29:1, KJV). The text even names the two men who carried it \u2014 Elasah and Gemariah \u2014 because in that world a message moved only as fast as a person could walk it.<\/p>\n<p>So the most shared promise in the Bible is not a line floating in the air. It is post. Written by someone at home, to people who were not, and it had to travel to reach them.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has waited on a message from home knows exactly what that is worth.<\/p>\n<p>One honest note before going further. The people receiving that letter had been taken by force. An army had emptied their city. That is not the same as signing a contract overseas, and it would be careless to pretend it is \u2014 most people who work abroad chose it, even if the choice was made with very few options on the table.<\/p>\n<p>But the question underneath is the same one: <strong>how do you live faithfully in a place you did not plan to be, far from the people you love, when you cannot simply go home?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah 29 is the one place in scripture where God answers that question with plain, practical instructions.<\/p>\n<h2>What God Actually Told Them to Do<\/h2>\n<p>Read what comes just before the famous verse. Not one word of it is what you would expect:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters&#8230; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.&#8221; \u2014 Jeremiah 29:5-6, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Build. Plant. Eat the fruit. Grow a family. Not &#8220;hold on.&#8221; Not &#8220;endure.&#8221; Not &#8220;keep your bags packed by the door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then this one, which is stranger still:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.&#8221; \u2014 Jeremiah 29:7, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pray for Babylon. Pray for the foreign city. The one you did not choose, whose language you are still fighting with, where you get counted as labour before you get counted as a person.<\/p>\n<p>Pray for it \u2014 because your peace and its peace are tied together now, whether you like that or not.<\/p>\n<h2>The Detail Almost Nobody Reads: The Timeline<\/h2>\n<p>Here is the part that stops you.<\/p>\n<p>One verse before the famous promise, God gives them a number: &#8220;after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you&#8221; (Jeremiah 29:10, KJV). Seventy years. Most of the people holding that letter would not live to see home again.<\/p>\n<p>And just before that, in verses 8 and 9, God warns them about something very specific. Not idols. Not the foreign city. Prophets. &#8220;Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Deceive them about what?<\/p>\n<p>Go back one chapter. A man named Hananiah had been standing in the temple announcing that God would bring everyone home &#8220;within two full years&#8221; (Jeremiah 28:3, KJV). He pulled a wooden yoke off Jeremiah&#8217;s neck and broke it in front of the crowd to make the point land.<\/p>\n<p>It was not true.<\/p>\n<p>Sit with that for a second. The lie God specifically warned those exiles about was not &#8220;you will never go home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was &#8220;you will be home soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Why That Lands So Hard When You Are the One Working Abroad<\/h2>\n<p>Because most of us living away are running on some version of Hananiah&#8217;s promise. One more contract. One more renewal. Two more years and the house is finished and I come home for good.<\/p>\n<p>Hoping to go home is not the lie. God promised those people they would return, and meant it.<\/p>\n<p>The lie is what &#8220;soon&#8221; quietly does to you. It lets you put your actual life into storage. You do not make friends here, because you are not staying. You do not learn more of the language than the words you need for work, because you are not staying. You do not unpack, join anything, plant anything. You wait \u2014 and the waiting eats years that were never coming back anyway.<\/p>\n<p>God&#8217;s letter cuts straight through that. Build. Plant. Eat. Pray for the city. Live where your feet actually are.<\/p>\n<p>And notice what God does <em>not<\/em> say. God never tells those people to stop being exiles. God does not tell them the distance is fine, or small, or their own fault. God simply refuses to treat the far place as a waiting room.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>God never told them to survive until home. God told them to live.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which means the separation you are living in right now is not a gap in your real life, waiting to be crossed before God gets involved. It is the place God is. The love you send home is not a lesser kind of love because it arrives by transfer instead of by hand. And these years are not lost years, even if they were never the ones you would have picked.<\/p>\n<h2>Three Things You Can Do Today<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Plant one small thing where you are (five minutes).<\/strong> Not a garden \u2014 roots were the point, and roots are what you are missing. Learn one new word in the local language and use it tomorrow. Greet the guard, the cleaner, the shopkeeper you walk past every single day and have never spoken to. One root.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pray for the city you are in, by name (two minutes).<\/strong> Not &#8220;get me out of here.&#8221; Actually ask God for good things for this place \u2014 its people, its hospitals, its roads, the family you work for or the crew you work beside. Jeremiah 29:7 is a straight instruction, and it costs nothing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Send one message that is not logistics (ten minutes).<\/strong> Most calls home get eaten by money, school, who needs what. Send one voice note that asks for nothing and reports nothing \u2014 just tell them one small ordinary thing that happened to you today. Presence is built out of ordinary detail, and ordinary detail is the first thing distance strips away.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Questions Worth Sitting With<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What part of your life have you put into storage until you go home? Write down the actual thing \u2014 the friendship, the course, the room you never made your own.<\/li>\n<li>If you knew you were here for another five years, what would you start this month that you have been refusing to start?<\/li>\n<li>When you picture God, are you picturing God back home with your family \u2014 or here, in this room, at this hour?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A Prayer for Today<\/h3>\n<p>God, I am tired of loving people from this far away. I did this for them, and most days I still believe that was right, but I did not know it would cost this much of me. Help me stop treating this place like a waiting room \u2014 help me build something here, even something small, even while I am still aching for home. And be with me here, in this room, at this hour, not only back there where my heart already lives.
