But something stays behind. A face. A word. A feeling that it was not nothing.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then the question shows up, the one you have probably asked before. <em>Was that from God, or was that just my own head?<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>So you go looking. And if you have ever searched for whether dreams from God are still a real thing, you already know what you find: two crowds shouting past each other, and neither one answering the question you actually asked.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Are Dreams From God Still Real? Both Camps Skip the Same Test<\/h2>\n\n<p>On one side are the dream dictionaries. Water means this. Teeth mean that. Every dream is mail, and there is a code for reading it.<\/p>\n\n<p>On the other side are the people who tell you God closed that door a long time ago. Stop asking. Read your Bible and go back to sleep.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here is what surprised me when I sat down with the actual passages. Scripture does have something direct to say about this. It is not vague and it is not buried. And it does not say what either crowd says.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is stricter than the first group. It is more open than the second. And the thing it tests for is not the thing anyone argues about.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n<h2>The Test in Deuteronomy 13 Assumes the Dream Came True<\/h2>\n\n<p>Read this slowly. It is worth it.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,<\/p><p>And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;<\/p><p>Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.&#8221; \u2014 Deuteronomy 13:1-3, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Did you catch the second line?<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The sign comes to pass.<\/strong> The dream is accurate. It happens exactly the way the dreamer said it would.<\/p>\n\n<p>And the instruction is still: do not listen to that person.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is the part that stopped me. Almost everything we do with dreams is built on accuracy. We wait to see if it comes true, and if it does, we treat that as proof. This passage takes accuracy off the table completely. A dream can be right about the future and still be something you should walk away from.<\/p>\n\n<p>There is one more line most people read straight past. The reason given is &#8220;for the LORD your God proveth you.&#8221; The accurate-but-misleading dream is not described as a mistake or an accident. It is described as a test God allows \u2014 a way of finding out what you actually love.<\/p>\n\n<p>So if accuracy is not the test, what is?<\/p>\n\n<p>It is in the sentence itself, and it is one clause long: <em>&#8220;saying, Let us go after other gods.&#8221;<\/em> The disqualifying thing is not that the dream was wrong. It is where the dream was taking them. And the very next verse says the same thing from the other direction \u2014 &#8220;Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>The test is a direction. Not a source. Not a success rate. A direction.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Jeremiah Ranks Dreams Instead of Banning Them<\/h2>\n\n<p>Centuries later, Jeremiah is dealing with a country full of people claiming dreams. And notice what he does not do. He does not tell them to be quiet.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.&#8221; \u2014 Jeremiah 23:28, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Tell your dream. Just call it what it is.<\/p>\n\n<p>Chaff is the light husk that blows off the grain on a threshing floor. It is not poison. It is not evil. It is just not the food. Wheat is the food.<\/p>\n\n<p>So a dream is allowed to exist. It is simply not allowed to outrank the word. You can hold both \u2014 as long as you know which one you would build your life on.<\/p>\n\n<p>And here is the piece almost nobody quotes, sitting one verse earlier. Jeremiah says the false dreamers are the ones &#8220;which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Forget God&#8217;s name. That is Jeremiah&#8217;s complaint. Not that the dreams were inaccurate \u2014 that they moved people away from God.<\/p>\n\n<p>Which is precisely the Deuteronomy test, showing up again in a completely different century, in a completely different crisis, from a completely different writer. Two witnesses, one criterion: <em>where did it take you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2>Even in the Age of Dreams, Dreams Were the Lower Channel<\/h2>\n\n<p>This next part complicates both sides, which is usually a sign you are getting closer to the truth.<\/p>\n\n<p>In Numbers 12, God is settling an argument about Moses, and says something that sounds like a straightforward endorsement of dreams: &#8220;If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>There it is in plain words. Dreams are a channel God uses. That is hard to get around if you want to say God never works this way.<\/p>\n\n<p>But keep reading. The whole point of the passage is that Moses gets something different \u2014 &#8220;With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Dark speeches. Not lies \u2014 <em>unclear<\/em>. Blurry. Needing interpretation.<\/p>\n\n<p>So even in the era when God was openly speaking through dreams, dreams were the lower-resolution channel. God says so directly. The clearer thing was always words, plainly spoken, face to face.<\/p>\n\n<p>Which means the dream dictionary crowd is over-reading a channel God never called clear, and the &#8220;it all stopped&#8221; crowd is under-reading a channel God explicitly named. Both are standing on ground scripture does not give them.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Scripture Also Says Most Dreams Are Just a Busy Mind<\/h2>\n\n<p>And then there is the category the whole argument forgets.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool&#8217;s voice is known by multitude of words.&#8221; \u2014 Ecclesiastes 5:3, KJV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>A dream comes from having too much going on. That is in the Bible. Thousands of years before anyone studied sleep, scripture already said the ordinary explanation is usually the right one: you had a full day, and your head is still sorting it.<\/p>\n\n<p>The same chapter lands it: &#8220;For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Not every dream is a message. Most of them are traffic.<\/p>\n\n<p>That should be a relief, honestly. It means you are not required to decode every night of your life.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Question Scripture Keeps Refusing to Answer<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here is what I did not expect to find.<\/p>\n\n<p>I went in looking for a verdict \u2014 does God still do this, yes or no. Scripture never gives one. It plainly records God using dreams, from Joseph in Egypt to Daniel in Babylon to Joseph being warned to take a child and run in Matthew. And it never announces anywhere that this stopped. When Peter stands up at Pentecost, he quotes Joel about an age in which &#8220;your old men shall dream dreams,&#8221; and says it is starting now.<\/p>\n\n<p>So the honest position is: scripture gives a test, not a verdict. Anyone who tells you the case is closed in either direction is adding something the text does not say.<\/p>\n\n<p>But look at what the test actually is, because this is the part that changes things.<\/p>\n\n<p>You have been asking an upstream question. <em>Where did this come from?<\/em> And you cannot answer that one. You will never be able to answer it. You have no instrument that reads the origin of a dream.<\/p>\n\n<p>Scripture asks a downstream question instead. <em>Where is this taking you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>And that one you can actually answer. Not tonight, but over weeks. You can watch where a thing leads. You can notice whether it pulls you toward God or quietly around God. Whether it makes you kinder or more certain that you are special. Whether it makes you want to pray or makes you want an audience.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is not a smaller test. It is a much harder one \u2014 because it cannot be faked and it cannot be rushed. A dream dictionary gives you an answer in ninety seconds. This gives you an answer in a season.<\/p>\n\n<p>But it is the test you can actually run. And I think that is the mercy in it. God did not hand us a puzzle we have no tools for. God handed us the one measurement we are genuinely able to take.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is the same pattern as the strange, quiet disappearance of Israel&#8217;s yes-or-no answering device \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/bible-resources\/bible-history\/why-urim-and-thummim-disappeared\/\">the Urim and Thummim vanish from scripture without explanation<\/a>, and what replaces them is not a better gadget. It is a relationship you have to walk in.<\/p>\n\n<h2>How to Test a Dream This Week<\/h2>\n\n<p>Take the dream that is still bothering you. Do not try to decode it. Run it downstream instead.<\/p>\n\n<p>Write one sentence: <em>if I fully believed this dream, what would I do differently in the next month?<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Then look at that sentence honestly and ask three things. Does it move me toward God or around God? Does it match what scripture already plainly says, or does it need scripture bent to fit? Would the people who love me and know me best say it is making me more like Jesus, or less?<\/p>\n\n<p>If the answers are good, you do not need to know where the dream came from. Do the good thing. It was worth doing anyway.<\/p>\n\n<p>If the answers are bad, you also do not need to know where it came from. The line about the sign coming to pass lands differently when you hear your own voice say it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tell one person you trust.<\/strong> Not for interpretation \u2014 for direction. Say the sentence you wrote and ask them one question: &#8220;Does that sound like it is pulling me toward God or away?&#8221; You are borrowing their eyes for the one measurement you cannot take alone.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2>Journaling Prompts<\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n<li>What was I actually hoping the dream would tell me? Name the thing underneath the question.<\/li>\n<li>Where in my life am I currently asking God for a sign instead of asking God for company?<\/li>\n<li>If God gave me a plain, unmistakable, wide-awake instruction tomorrow, is there anything I already know it would say \u2014 something I have been waiting for a dream to confirm so I would not have to decide?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>A Prayer for When You Do Not Know If God Is Speaking<\/h2>\n\n<p>God, I do not know what that was. I have turned it over all day and I still do not know, and I am tired of trying to work it out on my own. I am not asking for a code or a sign anymore \u2014 I am asking to be pointed the right way and kept there. If something in me is chasing a message more than I am chasing God, please stop me gently. And thank You that the test You gave is one I can actually run.
