It is the most common thing anyone says to a person opening a Bible for the first time, and it is mostly right. One problem goes unmentioned. Matthew, the Gospel your thumb lands on first, begins: &#8220;The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham&#8221; (Matthew 1:1). Then forty more names.<\/p>\n\n<p>The same wall that stopped you in Genesis is standing in the doorway of the Gospels. So the better question is not which page to open first. It is this: what does &#8220;follow me&#8221; mean in the Bible?<\/p>\n\n<h2>What Does &#8220;Follow Me&#8221; Mean in the Bible?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Greek verb behind almost every &#8220;follow&#8221; in the Gospels is <em>akolouth\u00e9\u014d<\/em>. It is built from a particle of union joined to <em>k\u00e9leuthos<\/em> \u2014 a road, a path, a way travelled. Its root sense is not &#8220;to agree with.&#8221; It is closer to &#8220;to be on the same road as.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>That changes the temperature of a familiar sentence. &#8220;Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men&#8221; (Matthew 4:19). Mark tells the same moment with even more body in it: &#8220;Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men&#8221; (Mark 1:17). Come after me. Get on the road behind me.<\/p>\n\n<p>And here is the part that unsettles the tidy version of this story. Read what happens next: &#8220;And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him&#8221; (Mark 1:18). Their nets were in the water. This was a working shift, a family business, income. Nothing in the text says they had worked out who He was, or what they believed about Him, or what it would cost. They started walking first. Understanding arrived later, on the road, in pieces, and some of it not until after the resurrection.<\/p>\n\n<p>Most of us assume the order runs the other way \u2014 study, then conclude, then commit. The Gospels keep showing the reverse.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Dust That Everyone Read Past<\/h2>\n\n<p>Roughly two centuries before Jesus said any of this, a Jewish teacher named Yose ben Yoezer left a line that survives in the Mishnah. Let your house be a meeting place for the wise, he said \u2014 and sit in the very dust of their feet, and drink in their words with thirst (Pirkei Avot 1:4).<\/p>\n\n<p>The Hebrew verb in that phrase, <em>mitabek<\/em>, carries the sense of powdering or covering yourself with dust. Scholars read it two ways, and the record does not settle it: either sitting on the ground at a teacher&#8217;s feet while he taught, or walking close enough behind him on the road that his feet threw dust onto you. You may have heard a popular blessing about being &#8220;covered in the dust of your rabbi.&#8221; That exact phrasing is a modern one, not a quotation from any ancient text \u2014 but the older line it grew out of is real, and both readings of it describe the same thing. Nearness. Proximity to a person, not assent to a position.<\/p>\n\n<p>Which brings back the question the video started with, and the piece fifty seconds had no room for: Genesis is not being thrown away. It is being postponed until you have someone to read it with.<\/p>\n\n<p>Look at what Jesus does after the resurrection, walking with two men who have no idea who He is: &#8220;And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself&#8221; (Luke 24:27). Moses. Genesis. The whole overwhelming front half. He taught it to them \u2014 and He taught it while walking. The detail most readers skim past is that this famous Bible study happened on foot, on a road, between two towns.<\/p>\n\n<p>So if a list of names is what closed your app, the practical fix is smaller than you think. Try a different door:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mark<\/strong> \u2014 the shortest, the fastest-moving, and it opens with no genealogy at all: &#8220;The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God&#8221; (Mark 1:1).<\/li>\n<li><strong>John<\/strong> \u2014 slower and more reflective, built around long conversations rather than a rapid sequence of events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Luke<\/strong> \u2014 the most orderly and the most detailed, and the one that carries the road to Emmaus at its close.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>None of these is the &#8220;correct&#8221; answer, and picking the wrong one is not a mistake you can make. The point of all three is the same person, and the invitation He gives in each of them is a verb of motion. Most people find the Gospels easier to enter because they show Jesus in specific scenes rather than centuries of background, and Genesis lands better later, once there is a face to read it toward.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What does the Greek word for &#8220;follow&#8221; actually mean?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe verb is <em>akolouth\u00e9\u014d<\/em>, formed from a particle of union plus <em>k\u00e9leuthos<\/em>, meaning a road or path. To two men who approached Him in John 1:39 He simply said, &#8220;Come and see.&#8221; &#8220;Come with me&#8221; is a fair modern paraphrase of the same invitation rather than a quotation of any single verse.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Which Gospel is easiest to read first?<\/strong><br \/>\nMark is the shortest and moves fastest, and it opens with no list of names: &#8220;The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God&#8221; (Mark 1:1). John is the better fit for a reader who prefers long conversations to quick scenes.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Do I need to understand the Bible before I can follow Jesus?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first disciples did not. Mark 1:18 says they left their nets immediately, well before they could have explained who Jesus was, and their understanding filled in over the years they spent walking with Him. Starting is allowed to come before comprehending.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Back to the Page You Closed<\/h2>\n\n<p>The list of names that stopped you was never a test you failed. It was a table of contents you were handed too early. Mark has no genealogy. Luke has Jesus explaining Genesis Himself, out loud, to two people who were walking beside Him without recognising Him.<\/p>\n\n<p>That is what the word has meant the whole time. Not a syllabus. A road, with someone already on it, and room beside Him.
