You started the plan last Wednesday, you made it five days straight, and then Monday happened — a late meeting, a kid who wouldn’t settle, a phone that died on the nightstand. This morning the app opened with a little counter sitting back at zero.

And in about two seconds, without ever saying it out loud, you decided something about yourself: I’m not the kind of person who keeps this up.

That decision — not the missed morning, but the conclusion you drew from it — is where most reading plans actually die. Not in Leviticus. Not at some hard doctrine. On day six, over one skipped Monday. So before we get to which chapters to read, we’re going to fix the part nobody writes down.

Show Me Day 1

You don’t need a study plan yet. You need an introduction.

Most Bible reading plans are written for people who already know their way around the book. They assume you can tell a gospel from a letter, that “Romans 8” means something to you, that you can hold four bookmarks in four different places without losing the thread.

That isn’t where you are. You said yes to a Person. What you actually want to know is what He’s like — how He talks to people, who He goes out of His way for, what makes Him stop walking in the middle of a crowd. A new believer bible reading plan should be built to answer that, and almost nothing else, for the first month.

Which makes the plan far simpler than you’re bracing for.

The four-week plan, in plain order

One chapter a morning. Twenty-eight chapters. That’s the entire thing.

Week 1 — Mark 1 through 7. Mark is the shortest of the four gospels and the fastest moving. Things happen. Jesus heals somebody in the first chapter. You meet Him doing before you ever hear Him explaining.

Week 2 — Mark 8 through 14. The story tightens. He starts telling His friends where this is going, and they keep not understanding, and He keeps taking them along anyway. Watch how patient He is with slow learners. That detail matters more than you think right now.

Week 3 — Mark 15 and 16, then John 1 through 5. Somewhere around day sixteen you’ll finish Mark, which means you will have read a whole book of the Bible, beginning to end. Plenty of people who have sat in church for twenty years have never once done that.

Week 4 — John 6 through 12. Now that you know what Jesus did, John lets you hear what He said about Himself. Same person, deeper water. By now you’ll notice you’re reading the second gospel differently because of the first — that’s the point of the order.

If you have two extra minutes, add a psalm. Not to study — to borrow. The Psalms are what people prayed when they didn’t have their own words yet, which is most of us most mornings.

Notice what isn’t in there. No Genesis-to-Revelation march. No “read the whole Bible this year.” No jumping between five bookmarks. If you’re curious why starting at page one is the most common way beginners get stuck, we walked through it in the best order to read the Bible for beginners.

The rule every plan forgets

Here it is, and it’s worth writing on the inside cover: when you miss a day, you do not go back and catch up. You read today’s chapter.

Decide that now, while nothing has gone wrong yet. Because every plan you will ever download is built on an unbroken streak, and not one of them tells you what to do the first morning the streak breaks. So you invent a rule in the moment, exhausted and a little ashamed, and the rule you invent is almost always “read two chapters to make up for it” — which turns tomorrow into a punishment, which is why you quietly stop by Friday.

A missed chapter is not a debt. There is nothing to repay. The streak was never the point; the Person was. Plans that survive have a comeback written into them before they’re needed, and that’s the whole difference between a plan that lasts four days and one that lasts four weeks. It’s also the honest reason most beginners quit around day four, and it has nothing to do with willpower.

Ten minutes is a real plan, not a smaller one

You may be waiting to start until you can give this an hour. Don’t. Ten unhurried minutes, repeated, will change more about you than one ambitious Saturday will.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105

The lamps that line describes were small clay dishes of oil, held low. They didn’t light up a road. They lit the next step, and then you took it, and then they lit the one after that. That’s the honest promise of a chapter a morning. You are not going to see the whole road this month. You’re going to see tomorrow, clearly, and that turns out to be enough to keep walking.

What actually changes by week three

Here’s the part people don’t expect, and it’s the reason to keep going.

Around week three, something Jesus said starts showing up in the middle of your ordinary day. You’re in a tense conversation at work, or you’re at a stoplight, and a line surfaces — not because you memorized it, but because you’ve been around Him every morning for twenty days. The Bible stops feeling like a reference book you consult and starts feeling like someone you know.

Your mornings get quieter, too. Not holier — quieter. The ten minutes become the thing you look for instead of the thing you owe. And the fear you’ve been carrying since the day you said yes, the one where you’re afraid you’ll drift and never notice, gets smaller. Not because you got disciplined. Because you got familiar. If you want a handful of verses to hold onto while that’s forming, these are matched to the exact moment you’re in.

Where a reading plan turns into a walk

A plan tells you what to read. What it can’t do is sit down beside you at 6:40 in the morning and say, here’s what this passage is doing, and here’s why it matters to your Tuesday. That’s the gap most new believers fall into — not the reading, the meaning of the reading.

That’s exactly what 30 Days Walking with Jesus was built to close. It walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time, in order, so you’re never guessing what comes next or whether you’re doing it right. Each day has a short devotional video under a minute, a full-chapter audio reading for the mornings your eyes won’t focus yet, a study guide with journal prompts so the reading has somewhere to land, and five quick-reference scripture guides for when you need to find something fast. Under ten minutes a day, start to finish.

It’s free. Not free-for-now, not free-if-you-give-us-a-card — free, because the words of Jesus shouldn’t sit behind a paywall. No payment, no card, no upsell waiting on the other side. Instant access on any device, and it’s yours to keep.

If tomorrow morning you’d rather open something that already knows where you left off, start with Day 1.

Start Day 1 Today

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What is the best Bible reading plan for a new believer?
A: The best plan for someone new to faith is short, sequential, and focused on Jesus rather than on covering ground. A strong four-week version is one chapter a morning: Mark 1 through 7 in week one, Mark 8 through 14 in week two, Mark 15 and 16 followed by John 1 through 5 in week three, and John 6 through 12 in week four. That’s twenty-eight chapters in about ten minutes a day, and it finishes an entire book of the Bible inside the first sixteen days. Reading plans that start at Genesis and try to cover the whole Bible in a year are built for people who already know the terrain, which is why beginners tend to stall in them.

Q: How much of the Bible should a new Christian read each day?
A: One chapter a day is plenty, and roughly ten unhurried minutes is a realistic target. The goal early on is familiarity, not volume — getting to know how Jesus talks and who He goes out of His way for. A repeated ten minutes shapes you far more than an occasional long session, and a smaller daily amount is much easier to protect on a busy morning, which is what keeps the habit alive.

Q: What should I do if I miss a day of my Bible reading plan?
A: Pick up with today’s chapter and don’t go back to catch up. A missed chapter isn’t a debt to repay. Doubling up turns the next morning into a punishment, and that’s the point where most people quietly stop altogether. Decide this rule in advance, before anything goes wrong, so you’re not inventing one while you’re tired and discouraged. Missing a day breaks a streak, not a relationship.

Q: Should a new believer start with the Old Testament or the New Testament?
A: Start in the New Testament, specifically with one of the gospels. Mark is a good first choice because it’s the shortest and moves quickly, then John, which goes deeper into who Jesus says He is. The Old Testament is worth reading and makes far more sense later — much of it is pointing toward Jesus, so meeting Him first gives you the context to understand it rather than being buried by it.

Q: Is 30 Days Walking with Jesus a Bible reading plan?
A: It’s a guided version of one. It walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time and includes 30 short devotional videos under a minute each, 30 full-chapter audio readings, a PDF study guide with journal prompts, and five quick-reference scripture guides. It takes under ten minutes a day, it’s free with no card required, and access is instant on any device and yours to keep.
