The first six chapters are stories: Daniel and three friends refusing the king’s food, Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of a huge statue, the fiery furnace, a proud king humbled, the handwriting on the wall at Belshazzar’s feast, and Daniel in the lions’ den. The last six chapters are visions of beasts, horns, angels and kingdoms rising and falling, ending with a promise of resurrection. Tying it all together is one question that still feels modern: how do you keep your integrity when you live and work inside a system that does not share your values? Daniel’s answer was to serve the empire well while refusing to bow to it.

Who wrote the book of Daniel, and when?

The book presents itself as the account of Daniel, a Judean exile who served Babylonian and then Persian kings, and from chapter 7 onward much of it is written in the first person (“I Daniel”). Jewish and Christian tradition has long credited it to him, writing in the sixth century BC. Many modern scholars instead date its final form to the second century BC, partly because the visions describe the Greek kingdoms in such detail. Both views agree the stories are set in Babylon and Persia between roughly 605 and 536 BC. One unusual detail: Daniel is written in two languages. Most of chapters 2 through 7 are in Aramaic, the common language of the empire, while the rest is in Hebrew, which fits a book about living between two worlds.

What does “the writing on the wall” mean?

The phrase comes straight from Daniel 5. Belshazzar, the last king of Babylon, throws a feast for a thousand of his lords and drinks from the gold cups taken from the temple in Jerusalem. Fingers of a man’s hand appear and write four words on the plaster: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. None of the king’s wise men can read it, so the queen sends for Daniel, who explains that the kingdom has been numbered and finished, that the king has been weighed and found wanting, and that his kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians. That same night Belshazzar is killed. Today “the writing on the wall” means a clear sign that something is about to end, usually one everyone but the person in charge can already see.

Why do Bible quiz teams study Daniel?

Daniel is a favourite assigned book for youth Bible quizzing because it is short, vivid and packed with exact details that make good questions: names, numbers, metals, animals, rivers and kings. Quizzers have to keep straight that Belteshazzar is Daniel but Belshazzar is a king, that the statue’s head was gold and its feet iron and clay, that the image on the plain of Dura was sixty cubits tall, and that Darius set 120 princes over the kingdom. The visions add a second layer, with the lion, bear and leopard, the ram and the goat, and the seventy weeks. This quiz draws its fifteen questions at random from a bank of 54 covering all twelve chapters, and every answer shows the exact verse, so it works as quick practice before a meet or as a family review night.

How should I use this Daniel quiz?

Play a round of fifteen questions and read the short note under each answer, because that is where most of the learning happens. Each round pulls a fresh random set from the bank, so playing three or four rounds in a row covers most of the book and shows you which chapters keep catching you out. If you are leading a group, read the question aloud and let people call out answers before you tap one. It is free, needs no sign-up, saves nothing, and nobody sees your score unless you choose to share it.
