Abraham is called the father of all who believe, and his willingness to trust God with his son Isaac is one of the most discussed chapters ever written. Isaac and Jacob continue the family line, and Jacob’s twelve sons become the twelve tribes of Israel. In the middle of the Old Testament, David is both a great king and a struggling dad whose son Absalom turns against him. In the New Testament, Joseph of Nazareth raises Jesus as his own, and Zacharias becomes the father of John the Baptist late in life. Then there are the fathers who appear for a single scene, like Jairus pleading for his daughter or the father who cried, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. And the most famous father in the Gospels is not a historical person at all, but the father in Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son.

Who was the best father in the Bible?

The honest answer is that the Bible does not hand out a trophy, and most of its fathers are a mixed record. Abraham trusted God deeply but also sent Hagar and Ishmael away. Isaac and Jacob both played favourites, and their families paid for it. Eli never stopped his sons, and David grieved a son he had not disciplined. Readers often point to Joseph of Nazareth, who protected Mary, acted immediately on warnings in his dreams, and raised Jesus in an ordinary working home. Manoah is another quiet example: before his son Samson was even born, he prayed to be taught how to raise him. But the father Jesus holds up as the model is the one in the prodigal son story, who runs to his returning son before hearing a word of apology. That parable is really a picture of God, which may be the point: every earthly father falls short somewhere.

What does the Bible say to fathers?

The Bible’s direct instructions to fathers are short and surprisingly gentle. Ephesians 6:4 says, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Colossians 3:21 repeats the warning and gives the reason: lest they be discouraged. In other words, a father’s job includes guarding his children’s hearts, not just correcting their behaviour. Proverbs is full of a father’s voice teaching a son, starting with My son, hear the instruction of thy father. Deuteronomy 6 pictures parents talking about God’s words at home, on the road, at bedtime and in the morning, which is less like a lecture and more like a life shared. Jesus adds that even imperfect fathers know how to give good gifts to their children. Taken together, the picture is patience, presence, teaching by example, and a steady kindness that makes a child want to listen.

What if my own father was absent or hard to love?

You are in good company, and the Bible does not pretend otherwise. It is full of fathers who got it wrong: favouritism, silence, weakness, anger, absence. Scripture tells those stories plainly rather than polishing them. It also makes a direct promise to people whose fathers let them down. Psalm 68:5 calls God a father of the fatherless, and Psalm 27:10 says, When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. Jesus taught his followers to pray to God as Father, and in Gethsemane he used the word Abba, a close, family word. Paul says anyone can cry Abba, Father through the Spirit of adoption. None of that erases real hurt, and it is not a reason to pretend a painful childhood was fine. It is an invitation: the love you missed is not the end of the story, and it is offered to you now.

How many questions are in this fathers in the Bible quiz, and can I play again?

There are 43 questions in the bank, every one written specifically about fathers in the Bible, from Adam naming Seth to the father in the parable of the prodigal son. Each round draws twelve at random and shuffles the answer order, so no two rounds are the same and it is worth playing more than once. Every answer shows the chapter and verse it comes from, with a short note on the story, so even a miss teaches you something. It works well as a Father’s Day activity, a men’s group icebreaker, a youth group game or a family night quiz read aloud. It is free, needs no sign-up, saves nothing and nobody sees your score unless you share it.
