It runs from the announcement of John the Baptist’s birth to the moment Jesus is carried up into heaven outside Bethany, and it covers that ground in twenty-four chapters. The first two chapters are the fullest birth and childhood story in the Bible, including the only scene of Jesus as a boy. Chapters three to nine follow his work around Galilee. Then, at chapter nine, verse fifty-one, Jesus “stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,” and the next ten chapters are told as one long journey south, full of the parables Luke alone preserves. The last five chapters cover the final week, the cross, the empty tomb, the walk to Emmaus and a meal of broiled fish. The book begins in the temple and ends there too, with the disciples praising God.

Which stories are found only in the Gospel of Luke?

More than you might expect, and several of the best-known stories in the whole Bible are among them. Only Luke tells the parable of the good Samaritan, the lost coin, and the prodigal son with his angry elder brother. Only Luke has the rich fool who planned bigger barns, the rich man and the beggar Lazarus, the widow who kept knocking on the unjust judge’s door, and the Pharisee and the tax collector praying side by side. Only Luke records Zacchaeus up the tree, the ten lepers with the one who came back, the widow’s son raised at Nain, and the boy Jesus left behind in the temple. At the cross, only Luke has “Father, forgive them,” the promise of paradise to a dying criminal, and the healing of a servant’s ear in the garden. And only Luke tells the walk to Emmaus. The quiz above leans hard on this material.

Who wrote the Gospel of Luke, and who was Theophilus?

The book does not sign its name, but from the earliest church writers onward it has been credited to Luke, a companion of the apostle Paul whom Paul calls “the beloved physician” in his letter to the Colossians. The same writer produced the book of Acts, which opens by addressing the same person and referring back to “the former treatise.” Luke is open about his method. In the first four verses he says many others had already written accounts, that he had traced everything carefully from the beginning using eyewitnesses, and that he was setting it down in order so his reader could know the certainty of what he had been taught. That reader is Theophilus, called “most excellent,” a title normally used for someone of rank. Nobody knows exactly who he was. The name means “friend of God,” which is why some readers have always felt the book was written for them, too.

Is this Gospel of Luke quiz good practice for Bible Quizzing or a study group?

Yes, that is what it was built for. It runs in study mode, so every answer, right or wrong, shows the chapter and verse it came from along with the actual King James wording. That makes it useful for anyone preparing for a Bible Quizzing season on Luke, a small group reading through the book, or a Sunday school class that wants a quick check at the end of a unit. The bank covers all twenty-four chapters and leans toward the kind of detail quizzers get asked about: exact numbers, like the five sparrows for two farthings or the threescore furlongs to Emmaus; names, like Cleopas and Joanna; places, like Nain and Sarepta; and who said which line to whom. Several questions are finish-the-verse style for memory practice. Because each round pulls fifteen questions at random from eighty-three, a group can run it several times in one session and keep meeting new material.

How long does the Luke quiz take, and can I play it more than once?

A round is fifteen questions and takes most people around six minutes, a little longer if you stop to read the verse under each answer, which is the part worth slowing down for. You can play as many times as you like. Each new round shuffles both the questions and the order of the answers, and with eighty-three questions in the bank you will see mostly fresh ones for your first several rounds. Nothing is saved, nothing is ranked against anyone else, and there is no sign-up or download. Your score lasts until you close the page. A good way to use it is to play once cold, note which chapters caught you out, read those chapters, and come back to see how far the number moves. It works on a phone as well as a computer.
