Matthew tells it in chapters 1 and 2, and Luke tells it in chapters 1 and 2. That is roughly six pages in total. Mark skips the birth entirely and starts with a grown man walking to a river. John skips it too, and replaces it with a single line about the Word being made flesh. The two accounts that do tell it cover different ground. Luke gives you Zacharias struck silent in the temple, Gabriel in Nazareth, the census, the manger, the shepherds, and the old man Simeon in the temple. Matthew gives you Joseph&#8217;s dreams, the wise men, Herod, and the escape into Egypt. Almost everything on a Christmas card is drawn from one or the other, and the nativity scene most of us picture quietly merges the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Were there really three wise men?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bible never says. Matthew 2 is the only account of them, and it never gives a number, never gives a name, and never calls them kings. What it counts is the gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh, three of them, which is almost certainly where the number three came from. The names Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar appear centuries later in tradition, not in scripture. Two other details usually get lost as well. Matthew says they came to a house, not a stable, and Herod works out from their own account of the star that the child could be as much as two years old. So the familiar scene with three crowned men kneeling beside the shepherds is a compression of two separate visits that may have been many months apart. None of that makes the story smaller. It just means the text says something more specific than the card does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do Matthew and Luke tell it so differently?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they are writing for different readers and building different cases. Luke writes like a careful reporter. He names the emperor, names the governor of Syria, dates the taxing, and keeps returning to people with no status at all: a childless country priest, an unmarried girl in an unimportant town, shepherds on a night shift, an old widow in the temple. Matthew writes for readers who know the Hebrew scriptures, so he keeps stopping to point at a prophecy and say this is the one. Bethlehem comes from Micah. The virgin comes from Isaiah. Out of Egypt comes from Hosea. Read side by side they are not contradicting each other so much as pointing at the same event from two angles. Luke is answering what happened and to whom. Matthew is answering why it matters that it happened here, in this town, to this family line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What year was Jesus actually born?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost certainly a few years before the year the calendar says. Both Matthew and Luke place the birth in the reign of Herod the Great, and Herod&#8217;s death is conventionally dated to 4 BC, which puts the birth somewhere in the years just before that. The gap exists because the BC and AD system was worked out by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus in the sixth century, several hundred years after the fact, and his arithmetic was slightly off. The date of December 25 is a separate question again. Scripture gives no month and no day, and the shepherds being out in the fields at night has often been read as pointing away from midwinter. The December date first shows up in Roman church records in the fourth century. Neither of these is a problem for the account itself, which never claims to be a birth certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How well do you actually know the Christmas story?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a quick way to find out.
