Devotional: Entertainment and Taking Up Our Cross

Introduction

Dear reader, in this fast-paced world filled with various forms of entertainment, it is important for us as followers of Christ to pause and reflect on how we engage with the entertainment industry. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Let us explore how this verse can guide us in our choices regarding movies, TV shows, and music.

Movies

When it comes to movies, there are those that inspire us to live a life of selflessness and sacrifice, just like Jesus did. Movies like “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Les Misérables,” and “The Blind Side” showcase individuals who embrace the call to take up their cross in different ways. Through these films, we can be encouraged to put others before ourselves, showing love and compassion in all circumstances.

Moreover, there are movies that challenge our perspectives and invite us to examine our own lives in light of Jesus’ teachings. Films like “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and “Life of Pi” encourage us to persevere through adversity, to seek truth and faithfulness, and to draw strength from our relationship with God.

TV Shows

TV shows also provide a platform to explore the theme of taking up our cross. From heartfelt dramas to thought-provoking narratives, there are shows that inspire us to live a life centered on Christ. For example, series like “The Chosen,” “This Is Us,” and “The Good Place” delve into themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of selflessness. These shows remind us of the importance of living out our faith in our daily lives.

Additionally, shows like “Breaking Bad,” “Westworld,” and “The Walking Dead” offer cautionary tales about the dangers of pursuing personal desires at the expense of others. They serve as a reminder that when we neglect our call to take up our cross, we might find ourselves trapped in a cycle of destruction. Such shows prompt us to reflect on our own choices and encourage us to align our lives with Christ’s teachings.

Music

Music has a unique ability to touch our hearts and souls. There are songs that inspire us to follow Christ’s example of selflessness. Songs like “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillsong United, “Blessed Be Your Name” by Matt Redman, and “Give Me Your Eyes” by Brandon Heath call us to surrender our lives to God and embrace His purposes for us. These melodies remind us of the joy and fulfillment that come from taking up our cross daily.

Furthermore, there are songs that challenge our comfort zones, urging us to engage with the brokenness of the world. Songs like “Do Something” by Matthew West, “Where’s the Love” by The Black Eyed Peas, and “Beautiful Day” by U2 encourage us to actively seek justice, compassion, and reconciliation. They serve as a reminder that taking up our cross involves extending the love of Christ to those who need it most.

Conclusion

As we navigate the world of entertainment, may we remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 16:24. True fulfillment comes not from seeking our own desires but from denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following Him. Let us choose movies, TV shows, and music that align with His teachings and inspire us to live a life of selflessness and love. Prayer related to theme of Matthew 16:24

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before You today with a humble heart, seeking Your guidance and strength. Your Word in Matthew 16:24 reminds me that if anyone wants to be Your follower, they must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow You wholeheartedly. Lord, I confess that sometimes I struggle to fully surrender myself to You, but I long to walk faithfully in Your footsteps.

Father, help me to deny my own desires and put aside any selfish ambitions that hinder my relationship with You. Teach me to let go of the things of this world that distract me from serving You wholeheartedly. Give me the wisdom to discern Your will and the courage to faithfully obey Your commands, even when it is challenging or goes against the ways of the world.

Lord, I recognize that taking up my cross means embracing the sacrifice and suffering that may come with being Your disciple. Please grant me the strength and endurance to endure any hardships or trials that may come my way. Help me to remember that in the midst of my struggles, You are always with me, providing comfort, peace, and hope.

Father, I desire to follow You completely, surrendering my life to Your divine plan. I ask for Your grace and mercy to mold me into the person You created me to be. Guide my steps each day, that I may honor You in all my thoughts, words, and actions.

Lord Jesus, as I embark on this journey of discipleship, may Your love and grace be my constant motivation and inspiration. Fill my heart with a deep passion for You and a burning desire to seek Your kingdom above all else. Help me to be a light in this dark world, reflecting Your love, mercy, and forgiveness to all those I encounter.

In Jesus’ precious name, I pray,
Amen.
